How often do you clean out your cats litter tray?

Just that really, how often do you?

We have 2 big male cats and 1 litter tray, mainly indoor cats and I’ve never seen them go to the loo outside.
I scoop the poop as soon as I see it, and do a total clear out once a week as it was starting to smell.

I’ve just cleaned it out and immediately both of them have gone and used it so I’m thinking maybe they didn’t want to go when it was so dirty? Should I be changing it more?

We use catsan litter if that makes a difference!

That was to Lua.
Catsan here, LongTom.

Elpheba · 17/04/2020 22:28

I scoop with a shovel and put it in nappy sacks and in a little compost container at the back door. Then pop the bags inside the bin liner when I do empty it which happens at least every other day generally so it doesn’t build up for long.

Hidingtonothing · 17/04/2020 22:29

2 indoor cats (including one elderly with kidney problems who can literally piss a river) and 2 trays, I'm aware I need another and am working on somewhere to put one in our shoebox house. I clean them out 2-3 times a day, use catsan so just scoop poo and visible dark wee patches and then they get emptied and jetwashed about once a fortnight. Mine get straight in and squeeze something out when I've just cleaned the trays too, even if they weren't particularly dirty Hmm

IcaMorgan · 17/04/2020 22:39

@Lua I flush it down the toilet. The trays are in the bathroom and I use wood pellets so it’s easy to remove poo and flush straight away

Costacoffeeplease · 17/04/2020 22:47

Cats like to leave their scent in a clean tray. I had one who would force a wee out while I was still scooping

GreenCheesePie · 17/04/2020 22:51

We got a second tray when we got a second cat, as we read they like to have their own trays.

However, they seem to have managed to communicate and come to an agreement that one tray is for wee and one for poo, not one for each cat. They both wee in the same one, then get out and immediately walk down the hallway to poo in the other.

Baffling.

islandislandisland · 17/04/2020 23:02

One tray for two cats, one outdoor and one indoor. Outdoor cat will only poo in the tray if it's an emergency. Indoor cat will hop straight into clean litter and widdle every time, in fact once she got in the empty tray whilst I was getting fresh newspaper and did a preemptive wee on the plastic which then soaked her feet Blush

Poo is removed into a small bag then whole tray is done when it's looking a bit pissy or Dcat has torn the paper to shreds, every 2-3 days or so.

CatTangle · 17/04/2020 23:09

When I had two cats , I had 3 trays (the general rule is a tray for each cat +1 extra).

Now I've just the one, I'm just using one tray and it seems ok.

I use Catsan non clumping; I scoop daily and do a full change/ wash the tray once a week.

CatTangle · 17/04/2020 23:10

Oh - I've got a litter locker thing as well, which needs emptying once every few weeks.

OneBigMother · 17/04/2020 23:20

2 indoor cats and 2 litters. Poop gets scooped and flushed straight away, whole clean out every 4 days. We use big 30 litre bags of wood pellets from pets at home £6.99 and lasts over a month. Use Aldi big bags to line the trays, so just lift and replace.
We used to use catsan, but it smells quickly and sticks their paws. Wood pellets smell like pine and it's easy to tell when it needs changed.

TheFluffiestCat · 17/04/2020 23:39

Two cats but only the kitten uses the tray because he's not allowed out at night. I scoop the poop as soon as I'm aware of it and empty and clean the tray twice a week. It was more often when he wasn't going out at all. I use the wood pellets. My old cat who died last year seemed to produce much stinkier wee and needed a complete change at least every 48 hours, sometimes daily.

Papergirl1968 · 18/04/2020 00:15

Argos do a corner litter tray for small spaces, Hiding. I promise I don’t work for them!
Greencheese I love that your cats have delegated one tray for wee and the other for poo.

GreenCheesePie · 18/04/2020 00:36

Me too! I'm mostly fascinated to know how they decided this! They're great pals, which is sweet.

sweetkitty · 18/04/2020 00:46

3 trays 3 cats funnily enough one tray is the poo tray, the other two are for pees only.

Scooped daily, full change every 2 days.

Lua · 18/04/2020 09:25

@longtompot I tried many litters and thing the pine pellets is the best. Especially because I -am- used to not home the whole day, so no way I could clean right after every visit.

Liked the sainsbury's one but have recently tried other brands are they are all fine.

Iwantacookie · 18/04/2020 09:32

Scoop poop as soon as it smells.
Wee litter tray gets a total clean every 3/4 days the poo probably every couple of weeks.
My cats are odd though and will use one tray for wees and the other for poops. Very rare will they pee in the pooh one or vice versa Confused
On very rare occasions I dont think they can decide which they want so shit in between the litter trays.

WoollyFoolly · 18/04/2020 09:33

@longtompot we use wood pellets, I get a big sack from amazon - pettex pampuss. They don't disintegrate and swell too much.

I rarely clean ours out because it's hardly used. I scoop poo out when it's there but a full change could be two-weekly or monthly, depending on usage. I have two cats and we used to have two trays but one was never used so we now have one. They both prefer going outside but as they are shut in at night we keep the tray for that. Still rarely use it though!

longtompot · 18/04/2020 10:57

Thank you for your comments. Just looked at Pets at Home and they have a 30l bag for £7.49 (25p per L as opposed to Sainsbury's £4.50 for 10l, so 45p per L). One of the plus points is after removing poos, you can put the wood pellets into the compost bin! I guess this will help with breaking the compost down. I think we will go back to wood pellets straight away. Now what to do with clay cat litter Hmm

madcatladyforever · 18/04/2020 10:59

i have a 19 year old cat and use catsan, she doesn't like going outside so she does all her business in the litter tray.
I have to empty out all the poo daily and clean the whole thing every other day as she makes a right mess in there.
If I leave it too long she walks poo all over the house.

VettiyaIruken · 18/04/2020 11:00

I remove it as soon as I see she's used it poo or pee) and clean the tray and fully replace the litter weekly. I use clumping litter, it's great for ensuring you get every little bit out.

Although she prefers to use my strawberry patch 😠 and only uses the tray if she's desperate.

InglouriousBasterd · 18/04/2020 11:25

One cat, two trays (bought an extra when she was left home for a couple of days and she was so delighted the second one stayed Smile) Scoop when the poo is there and change weeklyish. Rarely smells, unless very hot weather when it’s changed more frequently. I use the wood based litter which I find great. She refuses to go outside to pooHmm

Caspianberg · 18/04/2020 11:34

Ours is now rarely used as both go outside 99% of the time.
But we use cats best which is a flushable and compostable wood pellet based litter. have used since kittens. From zooplus.
When they were kittens and indoors it was easy to scoop each time they went and flush (the wee goes into a ball), and then once per week the whole tray was emptied onto compost bin (all poops and wee had basically been flushed). Tray washed with fairy and hot water.
Handy as nothing goes into the bin.

We used to have 2 litter trays for the 2 of them when they were indoor cats. Now 1 but like I said its mainly for emergencies or if they are ill and kept in. If yours are adult cats and use daily, you probably need multiple trays.

DeltaFlyer · 18/04/2020 11:45

I cat, I have 1 tray with wood pellets in. Poo removed straight away and I dig out the wet pellets at the same time. Into nappy bags then outside bin. Top up pellets where required.
Full litter change every Tuesday ( bin day Wednesday) and tray cleaned with anti bac with a new liner.
Used to be done 2x a week when we used the gravely litter as it wasn't nice to smell.
The pine is lovely though and cat seems to prefer it

NewName54321 · 18/04/2020 14:12

One female cat, two trays. One for wees and the other for both poos.

Scoop poo as soon as I notice using dog poo bags.
Clean out the whole thing about every 5 days. It used to be weekly, but by the end of the week she would perch on the very edge and get wee on the floor instead.

samlh · 23/04/2020 14:48

1 cat - 2 trays. scooped daily and dark patches of wee removed. Poop removed as soon as he has been (his number 2s are really stinky at the moment).

He absolutely will not go in either of them if it hasn't been scooped.

We use Catsan non clumping and change completely every 7-10 days.

Just to add, he is a housecat and doesn't go al fresco
