Cat disappearing frequently - what he up to - what do I do!!

He's just home after being gone for 12 days.

Weeks ago, he disappeared (unusual for him, previously he might stay out over night durimh a time it's hot). He came back after five days, he came back on a sunny day, non-working day for most people. I thought it might be possible he'd been locked in a shed. (He was thinner.) He spent two days coming and going (he's a complete escape artist), but wasnt eating at all. By this time getting a vets appointment wasn't as simple, and certainly not same day, made an appointment - cat doesn't come home that night. I start to stress he's ill and gone off to die.

He then stays out for 8 days, comes back no thinner, eats and drinks well. Behaves as his normal self. Goes missing again returns late last night.

He's put weight back on, won't eat his usual food but is drinking.

He's moved out hasn't he - can't think what else is going on. Is someone else feeding him more delicious food?

Should I try keep him in and reset his "home locator"! (I have seen that cats are supposed to be kept in at the moment, but 've also read they don't need to be.)

Is he neutered?
For male tom-cats which haven't been neutered one of the most common reasons why they may disappear for several days (or even weeks sometimes) is they have caught scent of a female cat in heat

How old is he, is he microchipped and has he been neutered?

You could put a collar on him, and attach a tag with your phone number on it. We had a cat that used to disappear a lot and come home well-fed, and it turned out she had decided to spend half her time at another address...

Neutered, microchipped, has quick release collar on and 5 years old.

Sorry, ment to put that in OP.
