Advice for a new rescue cat owner

Hi All,

We are bringing home a lovely rescue cat next week, we are first time cat owners. She was abandoned with cat flu by the side of the road and has had a few foster carers whilst in the rescue centre as she has been there a while. We want to make her as comfortable and feel as stress free when we bring her home, does anyone have an tips or advice on how we can do this in the best way?

Also any advice on the best types of toys she might like (or treats) - she’s had a rubbish start to life and we want to her to live her best life from now on Smile

Oh she's beautiful! What a lucky cat to have found such a lovely family

suggsy · 16/04/2020 16:49

I didn't know you could get sun loungers I will definitely have to look into this haha!

She really is a character and has such a lovely temperament - it makes me so sad and cross at the same time that someone would treat her so poorly :(. I also can't believe she was there for 7 months with no one wanting her!!! I have been fully converted to cats now... Grin

Or just give her your sun lounger and you lie on a towel.

B&M or the range did them last year.

That's lovely. That igloo photo is wonderful.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/04/2020 17:13

She also needs a teepee!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/04/2020 18:16

She needs a donut bed as well!

When we had no sofa for a couple of months (bloody Furniture Village!) we bought 3 loungers, 1 each for DH and I and 1 for Harry

Reading as my youngest would love a cat, I'm not much of a cat person but your cat does look very lovely indeed... congratulations!!!

It's starting to sway me into getting a cat!! Just have to get the dog to agree!

suggsy · 16/04/2020 18:28

I am currently looking into the tepees/wigwams haha. She does also have a donut bed in addition to her igloos Blush like I said she is the boss Smile (a very cute one though)

@Wishiwasrunning2 I was definitely a dog person, so was my partner we've always had dogs, we've fostered them, training them for various police forces and actively disliked cats. We then moved house and a neighbours cat kept visiting as we live in a new build estate and he kept getting lost. I missed him so much when we finally got him back to his owner I had to look into getting a cat myself. They really are brilliant :)

Coming back to this post as unfortunately yesterday we had to have her put to sleep as she had developed an aggressive cancer 😞 we had her for 5 amazing years and she was the most amazing cat through so many of my life experiences house moves, getting engaged, married, being pregnant and really poorly to tolerating a bouncy toddler. We couldn't have wished for a better pet and hope she enjoyed living her life in a absolute luxury after the rough start she had ❤️. Hopefully this will help people to consider adopting those "special appeal" cats as she was one. Definitely a once in a lifetime cat.

I'm so sorry. She was absolutely beautiful. It was so kind of you to take on a cat that was overlooked by everyone else. You obviously gave her five wonderful years of a loving and comfortable home with all her needs catered for.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/03/2025 18:25

I’m so sorry, she was a beauty.

Ellmau · 16/03/2025 18:36

So sorry, OP. She was lucky to have you too.

Mia184 · 16/03/2025 19:53

I am sorry, OP. But you gave her an amazing life and I‘m sure she enjoyed each and every day with you. ♥️

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/03/2025 20:04

So sorry, OP, she was a beauty. We had the same with our lovely girl last year (intestinal lymphoma for us) and it was absolutely horrible - but like you we know we gave her the best, happiest life.

PickledOnionOverdose · 18/03/2025 16:52

Oh no I am so sorry to read this OP. I was just reading through your thread and looking at her beautiful photos. You were meant for each other ❤️

Pudmyboy · 19/03/2025 23:34

So sorry for your loss, I am touched by your kindness to that extraordinary little cat, especially after her terrible start in life.
I am glad you had five lovely years of joy together: well, five to you but according to the Internet, a good fifteen cat years (I am prepared to be corrected by anyone better at calculating this!)
Thank you for letting the Litter Tray know, sad news though it is 💐
