Is ear clipping a standard for all neutred cat?

Read a thread where some posters suggested that ear tipping/clipping is done as a sign for feral cats that they are neutred.
Well our cat was adopted aged 4 and he is neutred with clipped ear. Does it mean he was feral or is this a standard thing? As far as we know he was adopted as kitten by previous slaves family.

Probably feral, I’ve never seen a cat neutered as a pet have a clipped ear.

Can really depend on how old school an owner is.
Sometimes ive heard it being done in rural locations or locations with a high stray population to mark your cat as being done /make people more aware it might be owned

Was he from another country? My friend had a cat that had moved from another country and her ear was clipped but she said that was common where she was from.

If a cat is neutered using a charity voucher, sometimes the charity ask for the ear to be nicked to identify them as neutered. Not necessarily feral cats, this can be unchipped strays people have taken in and adopted

AFAIK its just done to stray/feral cats who have been caught, neutered and released.

It's very common in certain countries. And if you adopt a stray that was already done, they will have a clipped ear. Some are done unnecessarily aggressively, mine has half his ear missing!

No it isn't, but I wish it was. It would make my life so much easier.

We often end up homing eartipped older kittens. These are normally ear tipped as we anticipate that they will have to rejoin the colony. However sometimes, during recovery, they show signs that they could be tamed and so end up being tamed and homed rather than returned - so we will end up homing tame kittens with ear tips.

As TCN says and boys are more likely than girls over the years I have seen a large number feral/colony males who are neutered and tipped and then prefer the easy life with food on tap.

Much like human males then.

My two adults are CPL , neutered/vaccinated and microchipped (by CPL)

Neither of them have ear tipping but if they were picked up, would scanning the microchip show that they were in fact neutered?
(I;m guessing they would contact us or the cats' vet to notify ) ?

@70isaLimitNotaTarget Assuming the chipping was done at the same time as the neutering then yes, it would be recorded with the chip details. And if they were picked up then you, yourself, would be contacted. Your vet would only be contacted if you were uncontactable as then they would be asked if perhaps they held more up to date details.

Thanks all. I think he was adopted at 1 month old. I don't think he was brought from a different country.. maybe the vets can tell me when or where he was done. I will ask them when we go next.

If you log onto the chip companies website you can put details in about the cats, I did a paragraph on likes/dislikes because he was a Bengal who didn’t like vets/anyone who wasn’t us & I needed them to know how to handle him.

I know DH changed their ownership details as soon as the ink was dry on their adoption papers ( mine now, my precious )

It hadn't occurred to me how much information is useful when a cat is scanned ..our cats just continue to be amazed how their magical faces can open the cat flap !

In Turkey a couple of years ago there were loads of roaming dogs with ear tags ( about an inch long) to show they were neutered .They were strays but there were bowls of water and food left out , the dogs mainly just laid about on the grass verges .

The hotel cats weren't ear tipped (and judging by the number of kittens probably not neutered) but they were well fed .
