Alternative to back-of-the-neck flea treatment

Is there a reasonably effective alternative to back-of-the-neck flea treatments? Our kittens hate them, it takes both of us, one to hold, one to apply and I don't fancy this once a month for the next 20 years.

For my dog we have a tablet which she takes monthly .

I know you have kittens, but I’m wondering if similar is available for cats as well?

TheoriginalLEM · 26/10/2019 23:01

A seresto collar is effective. Also tablets available (bravecto) but may be difficult if wont accept in food.

seresto

Both will need a vets prescription

GiantKitten · 26/10/2019 23:07

Bravecto for cats is still a spot-on, but only needs doing once every 3 months.

If you pay for a vets prescription you can then get it much cheaper online Smile

£16.50 from petdrugsonline

Or £26.40 for Bravecto plus which also covers ticks & most worms

I have the same thing, apart from even with two of us it’s never successful but that also may be due to their inability to follow instructions ( not the cat of course)
I have come to conclusion that will try the 3 monthly ones and the nurse at vet will do it as she tends to be better there.
She is not due again for a month so will see then if a good plan.

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/10/2019 07:16

Thanks! I didn't know whetehr there was an effective flea collar, and I didn't know about Bravecto - though £16.50 for a single dose for a single cat is considerably more than we're paying at the moment for Stronghold.

Ask if your vet does Program 6...an injection lasting 6 months which stops the fleas.

DullPortraits · 27/10/2019 19:29

Johnsons 4 fleas tablets..

ClientListQueen · 27/10/2019 19:32

Get them used to having their neck stroked while asleep. Ruffle the fur, part it, etc etc every time they're sleeping
Then you can whack it on whilst they sleep Wink

GiantKitten · 27/10/2019 19:36

There are some cats which react massively when the drops hit the skin - one of mine does. Stealth dropping isn’t an option, unfortunately. Like OP, it’s a 2-man job (& strong hands required)

ClientListQueen · 27/10/2019 19:38

Yeah mine reacts but if I do it when he's asleep and squeeze it all in one go, by the time they hit the skin he can react but it's done
I use bravecto so less often as well, and if it times in with his steroid jab I get the vet to do it Grin

WhoseBatHasBittenMe · 27/10/2019 19:45

My cat has Comfortis for fleas which is a tablet as he also hates spot ons

AnyFucker · 27/10/2019 19:49

I put the pipettes down my bra or in my jeans pocket about half an hour before applying. It seems to help when the liquid is warm and gives them less of a shock iyswim.

I pierce the tube then hold kitty under the chest from behind so front paws are lifted off the ground. Then part fur with fingers of right hand then apply liquid.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 27/10/2019 20:54

Warming it up is a good idea.

Mine both react but as I do them both in different rooms, have the pipette ready and part the fur before they see it, by the time they go crazy, it’s already done...

BirdIsland · 27/10/2019 21:00

I used Bravecto spot on for both my cats recently and, whilst it definitely worked, it took a 10p-sized patch off fur of both cats' necks, and they were both distressed for at least a day after I put it on, I felt awful. I'll definitely be using something different next time but not sure what yet.

VictoriaBun · 27/10/2019 21:00

Mine used to react to the spot on treatments. They are now on tablets from the vet. Credillios ( poss not spelt correctly )

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/10/2019 21:09

The injection only stops fleas breeding.

Mine reacts like I’m trying to kill him, and he shakes like a dog.

MaryMoffett · 27/10/2019 21:24

I put dreamies on the floor and have it ready to go

Lonecatwithkitten · 27/10/2019 22:26

Stronghold only last 4 weeks, whereas bravecto lasts 3 months and if you get bravecto plus it dies roundworms too.
