How do you stop your bin smelling of cat litter?

Our bin gets emptied fortnightly. Our litter tray gets emptied once a day. 90% of the rubbish in our bin is cat litter. We bag it up and tie it obviously but the bin stinks, particularly when it's warm.

It's the litter, the bin is clean and doesn't smell when it is empty.

Any tips for keeping the bin non-smelly?

Use wood pellet litter.

Jays fluid mixed with water in the bottom. I used to have this problem with our bin smelling of dog poo & nappies (all bagged) & doing this seems to have fixed it.

*Jeyes (my phone changed it Hmm)

@thecatneuterer We use wood pellets. I've not noticed any difference when we've had to use something else.

@BernardsarenotalwaysSaints do you mean wash the bin with jayes fluid? The bin is clean.

@BernardsarenotalwaysSaints we used reusable nappies but I remember a few days when we had to use disposable because our washing machine broke. It was mid summer and OMG the smell of the bin was awful! My husband never questioned the reusable again! Haha!

Mine is emptied fortnightly.
Bucket of disinfectant water after emptying (I just use the pet safe ones from Amazon same to wash trays) and when it's dry chuck a scoop of wash powder in the bottom.

You can get bin freshener powder

gamerchick · 17/09/2019 14:35

Why are up emptying each day? Just scoop out the soiled bits and top-up

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 17/09/2019 14:43

No, just have about an inch of jeyes & water day in the bottom, it seems to neutralise any smells & it gives the bin a rinse when they empty it.

dementedpixie · 17/09/2019 14:43

You dont empty the whole tray every day, do you? I use clumping litter so pee and poo gets removed daily but a full change isn't done for a couple of weeks. I time a full change for bin day

Sell the cat

GrimSisters · 17/09/2019 22:05

We use straw pellet litter. Some if it gets flushed with the solid waste and the rest goes in the compost bin.

HappyHammy · 17/09/2019 23:02

Just scoop out the used litter each day and double bag into scented nappy bags, put them in a separate small lidded bin with a neutradol pot in it, when the big bin is due to be emptied you put the small nappy bags into a black bin bag.

Along the lines of 'sell the cat' as an answer, what I do to stop my bin smelling of cat litter is to use my neighbour's bin about 5 doors down instead of my own Grin (to be fair though the house has been empty for a couple of years now so I reckon it's fair game).
