What is the best way to rehome a bonded pair?

PIL potentially moving abroad. They are not taking their cats with them.

We can’t have them as our own cat hates other cats, my dh and dd are allergic and just about cope with ours.

So we may need to look at rehoming them.

What’s the best way?

They are a pair of spayed female black cats. I’m not sure of their age but I know it’s over 5 and under 10

We got ours from Cats Protection, they had been rehomed as a pair for similar reasons, they are a litter pair and were young adults at the time.

Blue Cross have a Home Direct scheme which avoids them having to go into a cattery and would give PIL some involvement in the process. That would be worth looking into.

Always go through a reputable rescue so there is backup if things go wrong and they can do appropriate homechecks. Far too many vata rehomed via Facebook and Gumtree etc end up in very unpleasant circumstances.

It’s a shame we can’t take them as they really are sweet things but it would be fair on our cat and it definitely wouldn’t be fair for dd (dh is an adult...he can cope )

Cats Protection should be able to facilitate a home-to -home adoption.

Contact a cat rescue. We rescued our two cats as a bonded adult pair. Tbh most of the cats the centre were offering came in a pair! Not sure if it is a desperate attempt to get more cats into homes but we went with it even though we only started out wanting one cat!

We could pretend they are both the exact same cat...they just move quickly

Please start contacting rescues as early as possible - every rescue is extremely busy and has emergencies (i.e. stray kittens, ill cats etc.) and ask to have them added to waiting lists.

It's never a good idea to try to rehome privately through Facebook or anything like that, you just don't know people are who they say they are and there's no back up o safety net if things go wrong.

It going to be difficult - just because there are too many cats and not enough homes. And middle aged, black cats are rarely the top of the wish list of adopters. What a shame your PIL won't take them. Cats can go on planes after all.

The best time to rehome adults is between November and February, as that is when there is a lull in kitten season and so the rescues generally aren't in the full in crisis mode they are the rest of the time, and because there are fewer kittens, some people will be more likely to consider homing adults.
