I adopted a huge, 9 year old cat today, he's gorgeous. He's been through the wars, has had surgery following a nasty abscess on his tail and is wearing a cone. I know it's necessary but it's driving him mad and could be needed for some time. Has anyone tried any of the alternative collars which are available?

I tried an inflatable collar with one of mine. But she was as good as gold so didn't need it. It looks far more comfortable than the cone.

Unfortunately given it's on his tail I doubt much else will work.

Had it been on his abdomen you could have used a Babygro. (Seriously. Some vets use them for spayed females immediately after surgery.)

How about one of the soft flower fabric ones? I have a new rescue and she has also come with a cone!

We recently had to deal with the cone of shame for a tail abcess. Unsurprsingly, she hated it. Unfortunately, she just had to live with it. We took it off whenever we could keep an eye on her (ie in the evenings, when we made sure to provide her with a lap to sit on for a few hours). She got used to it after a day or 2 - initially she just wouldn't stand up properly and therefore couldn't get up the stairs (the cone was too close to the ground, so she kept bumping into steps!). The vet said she only needed it whilst she was on antibiotics though, which was about 6 days I think. Once she was off those, she was allowed to go cone free. Has the vet said how long he will need it for?
