Can a cat get fleas when their treatment is up to date?

RedCat is fully treated (next dose due on 12th). He's not showing signs - not scratching or biting himself. But both my ds and I have itchy raised lumps on or ankles (only a few).

I'm not 100% convinced they are flea bits as I can see a 'head' on them. Just look like hives. Still is it possible? Could he have fleas even with the treatment?

Wander about in socks that are white or very light. If you see fleas, you've got fleas.

You also have to consider that in some areas, fleas have become immune to certain types of treatment e.g. I gather Stronghold doesn't work as well as it used to. Which brand are you using at the moment?

dementedpixie · 02/04/2019 19:53

Depends on the treatment you are using. Frontline isn't supposed to work any more. Do you use a vet strength treatment?

dementedpixie · 02/04/2019 19:54

I've never heard of stronghold no longer working but have heard it about frontline

Had a good look at where he sleeps. No sign. In fact only sign is hives (?) on ankles/legs.

They live in the carpets. Can you see flea dirt on the cats?

RedForShort · 02/04/2019 20:12

Will have a good look at cat when he comes in.

Treatment is Prinovox - from vets. (It's a three monthly one (!!))

It is different from previous one they prescribed (Which right now I can't recall the name of) been using new one for almost a year

Are you sure it's 3 monthly? I looked it up and it said every 4 weeks. Are they indoor or outdoor cats?

RedForShort · 02/04/2019 20:21

Yes definitely. As vet said same as worm treatment (and I get reminder text from them when it's due).

I've checked each time I've got it off them.

The leaflet seems to say it covers fleas for 4 weeks. I use a monthly flea treatment (stronghold plus) and wormer (profender) every 6 months (stronghold plus covers some worms too)

RedForShort · 02/04/2019 20:26

Ok it's Bravecto.

Checked reminded text just.

Prinovox is the previous one (I've got the name off the stickers I'd put in his record file and thought it was stickers from new one).

Bravecto is very effective on the cat, but it sounds like your carpets have fleas I would spray with Indorexx, Acclaim or RIP. These will also kill other bugs that could be biting you.

It's great that the cat is up to date, but they (as well as you guys, visitors etc) can still bring fleas into your home.

They live in the environment, not on the animal. If you have fleas in the house, every flea would have to jump on the cat in order to succumb to the treatment. They can obviously breed before this happens and the cycle continues.

If you think you may have a few unwanted visitors, zap the house with a good spray - RIP Flea, Indorex, Staykill or Acclaim. You can buy them online. Treat the whole house (make sure you read instructions carefully with regard to other animals/fish in the house, ventilation etc) and vacuum regularly. The sprays mentioned give 12 months continued protection in the environment so pop on the calendar to do it annually and you shouldn't have any problems as long as you keep the cat up to date.

Checked Cat. Nothing there!!!

Will treat house 😭. Though both DS and I only have a few, and no new ones for a week, so it is possible we got them elsewhere.

Plus there's no head/hole on them - well mine any way, DS has scratched his into nasty sore looking things.

All very odd.
