Anyone got a cat flap in a glass door?

Hello Cat friends. Wondering if you have a cat flap in a glass door? Husband is worried about the security aspect of it (ie making our french doors vulnerable?)
We are getting measured for one next week, and wondering if there are any do's or don'ts when getting this. Will get one that reads microchips and can be locked. Also, if you wanted to post a pic of your door i'd be most grateful.

I used to - it's now in a wall - but that's just because I've had my kitchen layout changed. In what way would it make your door vulnerable? If it's under a handle then make sure the handle is locked and the key not left in. Apart from that there is no difference.

No .. but we have one in a ground floor bathroom window pane (astragal windows so the individual panes are only around 20cm x 25 cm), with a handy woodwn crate as a step up/down on the outside. Works really well.

In terms of security, I would be worried a catflap would make a big pane of glass more vulnerable to being easily broken.

PyjamasForever · 08/03/2019 13:10

It was cheaper for us to have one put in the wall next to the doors.

MrsFogi · 08/03/2019 13:13

Yes we have one because when we got cats it was that or digging a hole through a supporting wall so getting a new pane of glass for a bi-fold was cheaper than knocking through, replastering and painting etc. I don't consider it a security risk - if someone decides to break the glass they'll do so whether or not there is a cat flap.

We have one, works perfectly, pretty expensive so worth getting a few of quotes, ours varied wildly and remember to keep the original glass panel should you ever want to replace it.

@thecatneuterer is that a real Fox??

viccat · 08/03/2019 13:17

Mine is on a double glazed door (not French doors, just a basic double glazed two pane glass back door), I had the whole pane of glass replaced to have the hole cut.

I have heard the larger "pet door" size can be burglar sized (!) so I just got a standard microchip catflap. I don't feel it is a security risk any more than windows or doors in general, a determined burglar would find a way in anywhere regardless.

Yes, that's Samantha (probably - I have trouble telling them apart). She's not a pet though - unlike this gorgeous boy I once met in Pets at Home. Apologies for the foxy derail.

Great advice @blindedbymelon about keeping the old glass - thank you, looks great.

@thecatneuterer - look at that handsome fox! WE have some resident foxes too who are very interested in our cats...have they ever posed a problem to your cat?

we had panels put into the bottom of our patio doors and the cat flap is there.

SciFiScream · 08/03/2019 13:58

Yes. In a glass door. Bottom half of door. Cost £125 plus VAT to supply and fit. We've kept the old panel just in case.
Called our insurer to notify them of change to door. They weren't interested.

Thanks SciFiScream - didn't even occur to me to call insurance!

OP, no the foxes don't bother the cats. In fact they defer to them.

daisypond · 08/03/2019 15:23

We have one. It's not in a double glazed door, though. It has a circular edging designed for fitting into glazed doors. We did it ourselves.

Now I want a pet fox called Samathat🦊 😂!! I do have a cat flap too but we made the bottom panel pvc to make it easier
