My kittens got out through the cat flap! Will they be safe?

My four-month-old kittens both managed to get out through the cat flap today. I didn't think they would be able to open it yet because it's actually a small dog flap that the previous owners of the house left and it's quite heavy. I thought we had another month at least before they would be able to get through it. I've locked it for now but I would prefer to leave it unlocked as my adult cat uses it. Will the kittens be safe going out so young? With my other cats I've kept them in until six months old.

But no, it is not safe for four month old kittens to go out, especially completely unsupervised, they are still small and have no sense of what's safe to do and what's not.

I got them back in easily enough but one of them is very bold and won't think twice about leaving the garden and going exploring. Both are neutered so no concerns there.

Oh yes and both vaccinated.

I would leave it a bit longer and start the supervised going outside then go from there.

Mine are 7 months old and one jumped out of a window this morning... she is desperate to get outside and welive close to a busy rd... my dd is adamant they are not to be outside but I honestly don't know how that's going to happen if they are determined..

bullyingadvice Any cat can jump out of an open window just because they are curious. You should either cat proof your windows (look into Flat Cat screens or similar) or only open them up to 2 inches so cats don't get out. Can you let them out from the back of the property only, away from the road?

We are a row off the main rd so if they go uphill it's fine as open land. If they go downhill it's a very busy a road... I let them in our yard and it's got lots of plants and things to climb on. But only when I'm out. Obviously as the summer comes the doors open more... il have to see how it goes as I don't want them to be unhappy. Or squashed 😢
