Come and talk to me about worming and flea prevention please

I am just back from the vets with my 8mo indoor rescue cat after her injections. I asked about worming and fleas whilst I was there and given some advocate and advised to use it monthly. I was told this is all she’ll need if she’s not hunting. The thing is the vet we saw last time (same practice) said that 3-4 monthly is often enough for an indoors cat so now I’m confused! I don’t want to over treat (or spend money I don’t need to!). So my question is - how often do you worm and flea your cats? And is Advocate on it’s own enough?

Advocate covers fleas and some worms. I use flea treatment monthly and a wormer every 6 months for the other worms not covered by the combined flea/wormer

Advocate®is a topical spot on for use on dogs and cats. Advocate®is effective against fleas, flea larvae, ear mites, sarcoptic mange mites, demodectic mange mites, lice, immature and mature stages of roundworms, hookworms and adult whipworms and lungworms. It prevents heartworms, lungworms and skinworms and also treats circulating microfilaria.

Flea treatments make the animal poisonous to fleas, which is strong for a couple of weeks so catches one complete flea life cycle, but fades off.

Worm treatment are only a 'right now' thing, kills and flushes worms in the system at this moment.

Indoor cats won't be much subject to either fleas (caught from other cats) or worms (caught from eating small animals). They may not really need any treatments at all. Again, until they do.

We do our cats monthly for fleas (Stronghold) because our 99% indoor cat has terrible flea allergies and scratches herself to bits.

Indoor cats I recommend using a treatment for fleas all year round I like bravecto plus that does fleas, ticks, mites and roundworms and last three months. The a tapeworm treatment once a year, there has been a couple of studies that have shown that indoor cats are exposed to tapeworm by vermin, but at a much, much lower level than outdoor cats.

If your cat is really genuinely an indoor cat (as in never goes out at all) then she is a lot less likely to get fleas. But you might still bring fleas in on your clothes especially if you visit friends who have pets or have such visitors at yours.

When I had an indoor cat in a flat our vet said I could just use a flea comb to check her over every couple of weeks and if no evidence of fleas, treat her less often.

My vet gives us frontline to use every month/i also use advantage if I can't get to the vet as she never goes out. We also get drontal every 3 months for worms too
