Moving from kitten food to 1year + cat food

Hi cat parents. Just wondering to those of you who have had their cats from kittens, did you wait the full 12 months before moving your cat from kitten food to cat food? My cats are 6 and 7 months old, wondering if it's too soon (pretty sure it is!)

Mine are 11 and 7 months and I'm in the process of moving them. I'd bulk bought kitten food so using that up is the thing slowing it down. But I was told that once they're neutered/spayed then they don't need the extra calories in kitten food.

Oooo interesting Rockbird. Both of mine have been neutered too. Mind if ask which kitten food you're moving from and what you're going to try next?

They're on Applaws dry kitten and moving to Applaws cat. And Felix AGAIL kitten to Felix cat. So same food but just the grown up version!

I was wondering about this. Mine are being neutered tomorrow. We have quite a stock of kitten food so wouldn't be moving to cat food anytime soon anyway, but I read something about swapping once they're neutered and wasn't sure how accurate that was.

My kitten is 8 months old and is moving to adult food now. She was getting a bit tubby!!

It depemds in the brand, but s lot of the adult food is very similar to the kitten varirty. I asked about this on pet forums and someone had actually done an analysis on the ingredients and nutrition info.

My kitten is on lily’s kitchen and thrive wet. Plus a little dry applaws.

There are much better flavours in the adult varieties.

When our two were tiny I did a touch of research (Google and asking two of our vets) and there's no evidence behind kitten food at all. It's a con put about by cat food manufacturers to charge you more.

Unlike senior cat food, which is real.

My kitten is now 10 months but I got her neutered a few months ago. The vet nurse told me that we could switch her from kitten food to adult food from there on and there was no need to wait. Plus kitten food is quite calorific which neutered kittens don't really need as their nutritional needs shift. I did wait to switch until we had a week's worth of kitten food and slowly incorporated the adult food otherwise they get a bit of the runs if they're changed too quickly!

Thank you all so much for the comments REALLY bloody helpful! And i think once we've run out, i'm going to (quote Michael Jackson) make the change.

Agree with all the above. We started our kittens on kitten food BUT they preferred the older cats' food and the older cats (of course) thought the kitten food was brilliant. Grin
They all got adult food from about four or five months.

Also another quick Q, how much are you cats eating per day - i know it varies wildly from cat to cat. One of mine eats 5, YES 5 pouches per day (refuses dry food!) and the other has about 2 pouches with some dry food.

Difficult to tell individually with four cats (see pic) - but mine get through anywhere between 10 and 14 pouches per day plus dried food. (Plus mice, shrews, voles etc).

My kitten is eight months and 7lbs in weight. She eats two trays of lily’s kitchen a day and handful of dry food at night.

Apparently it can depend on the quality of the food - with higher quality food being more dense in nutrients and therefore the cats need less?

MadCatEnthusiast · 24/01/2019 19:46

Mine is about 3kg and she eats 2 pouches and a bit of dry food but not always

SpoonBlender · 24/01/2019 22:01

Most any of ours went through was 4 and a half packs a day, months 2-6, another dry food dodger. He grew out of it, now on 2 packs and dry food like the rest.
