I wanted to adopt an older cat from gumtree. Found a gorgeous one, messaged about her. The response I got was ‘I will be doing a home visit with my male friend, we will be looking through your freezer, fridge, draws

Wtf? Why do they want/ think they’re entitled to look through your drawers. Please don’t let them do it, they’ll almost certainly rob you.

Xxalisoncxx · 07/07/2018 20:49

Apologies caught the button. I was absolutely gobsmacked at this, I get you want a safe home for your pet. I’m not allowing 2 strange men to go all through my home, draws etc, am I been silly here?

Maybe they think you keep poorly kitten in your drawers, and want to see freshly dead mice in the freezer?

Hopefully just a set of predictive text errors.

TheClitterati · 07/07/2018 20:50

Yeah fuck that! He's a sleaze or Robber

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 07/07/2018 20:51

Eh? Always a bad idea to regime via gumtree for this very reason! Nutters abound. Lots of lovely cat charities who will find the right cat for you, and support you with any ussues, including taking the cat back if is isn't working for about reason. Please contact one of them about a cat

itsBritneyBeach · 07/07/2018 20:54

Definitely do not do this - sounds dodgy as shit. They'll probably try to rob you or will be telling their mates about what sort of stuff you have and how easy it is to find etc.

Please please please do not use Gumtree to find pets, I know how sad it is to think of leaving them but there are plenty of rescues to go to. Thanks

Xxalisoncxx · 07/07/2018 20:56

Thank you so much for your responses! I’ve looked around and there’s a lovely cat charity, I’ll contact them next week. So far there’s around 5 messages I’ve had on the gumtree site demanding I get in touch to arrange my home visit, lesson learnt, I darent read the rest

Wow! What a creepy thing for them to suggest!

Hell no! Trying to ensure a good home for your pet to be rehomed in is admirable, but rooting through someone's personal belongings?? Absolutely no need.

I adopted from Cats Protection years ago. They did a home visit, but they were absolutely lovely and were not at all intrusive. They basically just wanted to make sure my home was suitable for a cat. By no means did they root around my house! She just sat on my sofa and chatted to me about the things I might want to buy in preparation for the adoption.

Our cat is 7 years old now, we had him as a kitten. He was neutered, up to date with injections, flea and wormed, and health checked.

LanguidLobster · 07/07/2018 21:34

Draws Grin Sorry. That puts a whole different slant on it.

I wouldn't agree, that's odd. A hood organisation for cat rehoming sounds best.

LanguidLobster · 07/07/2018 21:34

Hood. Oh dear I'm doing it too, good.

Xxalisoncxx · 07/07/2018 21:40

Languid, I’ve just had my mums partner say, they want an excuse to look at her frilly pants, theses probably no cat! In all seriousness though, I wonder if there is a cat as one of the questions was ‘are you single’

I’m so glad I posted on here, I feel like such a prat

Oh yikes, run! You'll find a lovely little cat to love

Lindy2 · 07/07/2018 21:44

Scoping you out for a future burglary perhaps?
Not normal at all. Don't give them your address and definitely don't let them in your home.
Please adopt through a proper cat rescue. There are so many good rescues all around the country. Gumtree isn't one of them.

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 08/07/2018 09:14

Dodged a bullet there OP! I suggest you block them to stop them harassing you. You didn't give them your address did you?

MiniLeopardInTheHouse · 08/07/2018 10:59

If I was rehoming a cat, I would want to know who the cat would be living with, as would any reputable rescue, hence the clumsy 'are you single?' question. I would want any interested parties to know that my homecheck would be thorough, hence the 'going through your freezer, fridge, drawers' comment - it could be a jokey way of getting that point across. So they could possibly be legitimate, OP.

Having said all that, personally I wouldn't rehome a cat on Gumtree or similar sites, or look for a cat there either. As others have said, although they're not all perfect you're far better off going through your local rescue.

Cats advertised on sites do pull at our heartstrings however. If they genuinely exist, and are with the kind of people who'd put a living creature up on there, they probably need a good home a bit more than most.

Good luck in your search OP. Better safe than sorry. 😻
