Our cat has gone missing. Any stories of cats coming back after a while please?

Have had Suki for about 6 weeks - adopted her from a cat rescue. Let her out a bit after a few weeks and she generally stayed near the house sometimes venturing into next doors garden.

On Monday we realised we hadn’t positively seen her for a few hours and haven’t been able to find her. Have posted on local pet finding pages and put posters through neighbours doors but she seems to have disappeared Sad.

There’s another black cat who lives round here and we’ve thought it was her. As has another neighbour.

Really want her to come back. And DH has been getting very sad about it too. Here’s a picture of her

Two of ours disappeared for a week on separate occasions and came back perfectly well, if a little thinner. So don't give up yet!

Our highly strung unaffectionate lady came back after 5 weeks with a new understanding of which side her bread is buttered. She loves to be stroked now. I hope yours comes back soon, it's a horrible feeling.

Likejellytots88 · 10/05/2018 17:41

My cat used to do this often, usually if we went on holiday - would find a suitable place to hide out until he realised we were back, this usually involved taking a few walks around the estate with some cat treat. Could be gone up to a week sometimes but was usually only for a few days towards the end of holidays when he realised we weren't the ones feeding him everyday!
Try not to worry too much, cats generally turn up just fine - maybe thinner and possibly a few scrapes from other cats but generally fine.
Also, she is gorgeous!

Aprilmightbemynewname · 10/05/2018 17:43

Could you contact the rescue centre and find out which area she came from? - she may have tried to find her way back.
Our rescue cat vanished and I found her living rough nearby 6 months later!!

autumnboys · 10/05/2018 17:45

She’s lovely!

Is she microchipped? We had a cat who turned up after 2.5 months because the vet could scan it. Fingers crossed yours comes home sooner than that. Flowers

TheVanguardSix · 10/05/2018 17:48

Ah she's beautiful!
Our cat takes an annual vay-cay of about 6 weeks. It's always in August then he comes rolling up in October. It's May and I am already getting really anxious about it. He's four years old and he's done this habitually for the past 3 years (with little mini-breaks in between). Cats are amazing, resilient, clever creatures. God knows what they get up to on their adventures.
Mine always comes home a bit on the skinny/feral-looking side, but perks up within days.
The warm weather really encourages cats to go exploring, so I wonder if the recent spell influenced Suki to go on a walkabout.
Can you ask your neighbours to check garden sheds?

MirandaWest · 10/05/2018 17:49

Thank you everyone - am trying to stay hopeful.

She is microchipped (is currently still registered to the cat rescue place but they know she is missing). And she came from about 20 miles away so hope she hasn’t gone there. Was in the rescue centre for about 4 months so suppose she could have tried going there but she hadn’t shown any signs of it before.

Come back Suki

We’ve put posters through all the houses here (little row of about 14) asking them to check their sheds. Not convinced everyone has but Dh says if we asked to check they’d think we were odd. Maybe people will do gardening at the weekend and she will come back.

Yep mine went missing for about 11 days, no idea why. Don’t give up hope. I put out lots of flyers and got a call eventually and that’s how we found her.

Allergictoironing · 10/05/2018 18:10

One of the cats I sat for Christmas before last went missing for a whole month and was found again Smile

Pebblespony · 10/05/2018 18:16

Mine went for five or six days. Neighbours keeping an eye out. After 5 days, neighbour's husband mentions to her that the cat still hasn't left the shed. Turns out the cat had gone into the (big) shed, neighbours have dogs so cat afraid to come out. Wife never told husband there was a cat missing. Husband never told wife there was a cat in shed.

LanguidLobster · 10/05/2018 19:10

Come back Suki. She's beautiful.

I've never had to deal with a cat going missing for long (only a few hours) but there are some nice stories on here about the little devils turning up again after a while

bobstersmum · 10/05/2018 19:12

Our castrated male cat used to disappear for days at a time!

Yes 10 days one, he got lost and was 40 houses down at the bottom of our street. I did all the posters and leaflets etc.I kept getting phone calls from the bottom of the street saying he was down there. Eventually he was at the back of someones shed so I called him and he came out crying. He wouldnt stop crying all night after getting home.
My other cat went missing for 1 year and was returned to me becaus e he was hanging round a hotel and a guest went on Facebook and a lady scanned him. He was chipped to me, so thats how I got him back. Dont give up hope, unless a body has been found, shes out there wandering about.

LittleCandle · 10/05/2018 22:15

One of my cats vanished for 48 hours and then turned up, hungry and thirsty but okay. He reeked of washing powder. He had been shut into our neighbour's shed where he keeps the washing machine. It was difficult to know which of them got the bigger fright when the shed was opened again.

When I was a kid, we inherited a cat when we bought a shop. It was an antisocial beast and I was scared of it. It vanished a few times, for weeks and weeks. It did come back, until one time it just disappeared.

I hope your cat comes home. She's lovely.

MirandaWest · 11/05/2018 11:27

Has been nearly 96 hours now...

Want to try and be optimistic but is getting harder.

The longest one of my mums was missing was 2 months when I was a teenager. We thought we had lost her for good. I had an odd feeling one Sunday to go to the front door and there she was dragging herself up the steps. Vet thought someone had cat nicked her as she was a very affect ant cat with unusual markings and he think she got hurt escaping and came home. Had to have a leg lopped off but didn't bother her in the bit! Lived the life of pampering and popping round the neighbours for cheeky noms til she was a grand old age.

Don't give up hope even if you feel a berk shaking dry food and calling! Wishing u tons of luck ThanksThanks

CantChoose · 12/05/2018 18:04

I hope Suki comes home long before this but I found a cat which had been missing for three months!!
It wandered in my front door bold as brass, I matched its picture on a lost pet website and thought it couldn't possibly be the same one but the chip confirmed it.

MirandaWest · 12/05/2018 18:42

Just realised I’d forgotten to update here Smile.

Suki came back this afternoon with a lot of mewing. Think she must have got shut into a garage or shed. She devoured much food and is on house arrest for a little while. Has been having many hugs from DD especially Smile

Thank you for all the tales of cats returning - helped me to have hope.
