My cat died today :o(

We're so, so sad. He was off his food and wasn't his usual self so we took him to the vet yesterday. They ran some blood tests and the results were due today. But by this morning he had significantly deteriorated and we took him back in first thing. An hour later they called to say he was gone 😓

Such a shock. He was 8, so not super old. They'll do an autopsy to find out the cause. Coming back home to his little water fountain running in the kitchen and knowing he'll never use it again was just horrible. I turned it off and emptied it. At least the kids are too young to understand (2yrs & 4 months).

I had a bad feeling last night; in my gut I think I knew he wasn't going to make it but I don't know why. DH didn't have this same feeling and consequently when he answered the phone to the vet this morning he burst into tears.

Here he is, our fluffball. R.I.P. minou, we will never forget you xxx

@MrsHandles
Ah that's really encouraging news, I hope your minou pulls through! Cats are antisocial sods with each other anyway aren't they..... meaning I couldn't rule out a fight at the rainbow bridge (thus somewhat spoiling the ambiance for the other fluffies passing though), so it's maybe best if mine goes on ahead! Fingers crossed for you 🤞

@Stilllivinginazoo
Yes that's a very good idea, thanks. DH wants to keep his brush (he loved it... could never get him to appear by shaking a kibble box, but scratch the brush on the floor and he was there tout de suite!). I also found some lovely memorial things on Etsy too.

@DeltaG Update from the vet: he has licked some jelly off wet food and nibbled a couple of biscuits, so still not classed as eating. If he doesn’t pick up further in the 48 hour window then she said we’ll have to say goodbye. I’m devastated.

So sorry to hear your sad news. Terrible when we lose our much loved cats.

Mrs Handles, one of mine was ill and not eating for about a week, we kept her going with Lick e Lix yoghurt treats as they were all she would attempt to lick, her appetite returned in time although we never found out what was wrong. They might be worth a try?

MrsHandles · 11/05/2018 08:36

He’s still with the vet. They want to keep him to monitor his food intake and to keep him on the drip. They’ve tried both wet and dry food.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, OP

DeltaG · 11/05/2018 09:14

@MrsHandles

Sorry to hear it's not better news.

The eating thing is so difficult isn't it. My cat was never a good eater and went on hunger strike over cattery visits, a new sofa, birth of DS1 etc. So we were used to him being fussy with food. I hope we don't find out we left it too long to go to the vets this time though. I know cats can get fatty liver disease if they stop eating for too long and it's fatal.

I had a bad feeling this time though, just somehow knew he wouldn't come back from it ☹️

I know mine isn’t going to come home, I just know it. He’s the most beautiful cat but has just turned to skin and bone. My beautiful boy

So sorry to hear about your little cat. RIP little man. It's not easy, but try and hang on to all the good memories and the lovely life he had with you.

Amunamun · 11/05/2018 09:32

So sorry :(

DeltaG · 11/05/2018 09:37

Ah he looks like a lovely boy 💕

Mine was 3.1kg when he passed. He was normally around 4kg. It's a classic sign isn't it, the not eating. For dogs too, although often easier to spot as they're greedy little buggers usually aren't they?

My 2 year old keeps asking for the cat and looking in his teepee for him (the cat often slept in there) Sad

so sorry for your the loss of your boy, OP. he’s beautiful. as is your boy, @mrshandles

our eldest is 12. she’s eating and drinking fine, and sprints round the garden but she’s thin and is licking herself bald. i’m psyching myself up for the vet appointment. she’s absolutely fine in herself. she’s short-tempered and grouchy but has been her whole life!

slippermaiden · 11/05/2018 09:47

Sorry to hear this, he looked like a gorgeous cat xx

DeltaG · 11/05/2018 09:47

Thank you @exWifebeginsat40

It's a worry isn't it.... I remember a vet saying about one of my childhood cats (who had cancer) that they are stoic and hide things well. So we're just left with a vague feeling of uneasiness that something isn't quite right, even though there's no real proof (until we take them to the vet).

They're a mystery cats. Simultaneously we know them so well and yet not really at all. I think it's part of their charm.

Probably like most of you, this isn't the first time I've been through this process of grieving a furry friend. And it won't be the last either, as the amount of love and joy they bring to our lives far outweighs the pain of their passing.

Thanks To anyone else suffering the pain of losing a beloved pet.
