Advice on keeping catmate fountain clean pls?

Hello fellow cat people, hoping someone might be able to shed some light on what I'm doing wrong with my catmate water fountain.

I'm having to replace the filter much more often than monthly as its getting a greenish tint and smelling brackish (although water itself doesn't smell like this). When I wash the fountain, I wash the pump bits and let them air dry before reassembly. This is the second pump as I foolishly didn't keep the first one clean enough and thought a new one might solve the problem but very quickly had brackish issues again.

Am I just not cleaning it often enough? How often do people clean theirs?

Anyone else had a similar problem? Considering whether to switch to another type of fountain

Thank in advance

Ours was brilliant, but it was washed every day, just like the food dishes.

I change the filter every month but scrub the whole thing weekly and rinse the filter really well. I also keep it on full power and make sure the water is topped up daily.
Seems to be enough to keep it working well.

When the cat drinks, spit and food particles get into the water. So you get scum. Same as in school, when children don’t take their water bottles home daily and wash them. Yes, they top up with clean water, but by the end of the week, they’ll be green and scummy.

Thanks for the replies, will try cleaning more than once a week

You’re just basically finding out they’re more trouble than they’re worth. Grin

I gave up on mine, 750ml of water is taking the mick.
