I’m getting a kitten. What do we need?

I’m so excited, but it’s a long time since we had a cat. Other than the obvious (bed, litter tray, food bowls, toys) is there anything I should definitely be getting for our newest family member? And what toys are good? Have things moved on from the mice on fishing rods of my childhood?

Invest in some good food containers. As soon as they're big enough they WILL raid the food cupboard. I'd also recommend getting them a separate blanket for the bed. Otherwise your blanket very quickly becomes no longer yours! Also check the washing machine and tumble drier every time before you turn it on little bastards love them for some reason

Mine also love to play fetch with the little pompoms from craft shops. So cute!!! we play for hours

I second getting two!

I recently just got another kitten to keep my 2 year old cat company he's a Maine coon so still very playful and kitten like as he's always trying to play with the dog who's old and grumpy!

I'd recommend pet wipes incase you have any upset tummies and also litter tray wipes and a disinfectant spray. Good luck ☺️

Home Bargains do a scratch post for £4.99, much cheaper than pet stores.
Probably also cheaper for feeding bowls, toys etc.
Dcat has never been interested in little mouse toys, balls etc. He likes toys that are big enough to wrestle with so a soft toy nearly lifesize cat and a kickeroo, plus a laser toy.
When he was a kitten he liked tunnels which you can get from the pet aisle at Morrison’s and a rigid plastic tube circle thing with balls in and gaps for him to pat the balls.
Has anyone mentioned a cat carrier? They’re an essential.
And a grooming brush.

Oh and we had a pyramid type bed he did retreat to occasionally as a kitten, but now he just takes over about two thirds of mine.

We are about to get 2 kittens and we have decided to put them in a large dog crate at night time or when we are out as they are SO good at getting stuck in small spaces. Also, I heard of a very sad story where a kitten was sleeping on the floor and a pillow fell off the bed when the person was moving around and it was trapped and died. I can't bear the thought of anything happening to ours so we are going to crate them at night until they are stronger. Also, have a look at putting them on a raw food diet - have been looking in to it and it's amazing.
