Can I change a cat's name?

I'm collecting my rescue cat next week. He's a beautiful 4 year old silver tabby - with a ridiculous name. I can't think of anything which sounds the same and would be less embarassing for both of us when I call him in. Can I change it altogether or would that give him an identity crisis?

My cats definitely know their names. When I call Cat A she comes to me and Cats B and C don’t. If I call, “Here Cats-Cats-Cats!” they all come, if they think it worth their while.
