Elderly Cat Suddenly Quite Poorly.

He was 16 last summer.

He was OK yesterday and this morning, but from late afternoon and early evening has been extremely low. Sleeping all the time, no interest in food or anything around him, not wanting to be touched. Extreme tiredness.

I first noticed something probably wrong when he showed no interest in his food. He then later fell off his favourite perch of our hall windowsill, where he often likes to snooze. He hardly seemed to notice he had fallen and just didn't seem bothered about getting up off the floor.

He is comfortable on a cushion on the floor, with a towel covering him. Let's us syringe some bits of water into his mouth every hour or so, but then starts to resist.

If there is no noticeable improvement in the next few hours I think I might be spending my Christmas morning driving him to the emergency vet, where at his age it obviously may not be good news. Can't leave it at this until Wednesday. Poor boy.

I couldn't have driven him to the vet this evening as DH and I had already shared a bottle of wine for Christmas Eve before the problem became apparent. I've spoken to the out of hours vet. I am following all of their advice. A lot of calls due to Christmas, so looking as though I will have to visit them in the morning.

Need a hand hold. At least he doesn't seem to be in pain and is peaceful.

So sorry to see this. You must take comfort that he was so well loved and had shared your life for 16 years.

It really is the kindest thing to do.

((hugs))

I'm so sorry. It ia scary how quickly they can go downhill. I'll raise my next Wine to him.

So sorry. Had to do the same for my two oldies and it was very hard even though I knew it was the right decision both times. RIP Topseycat Flowers

Thank you all again.

I came down to breakfast to a lovely surprise today. DD3 had spent all night doing this beautiful painting of our cat. It is from a photo we have of him in his heyday.

She is a brilliant artist. She is 15. The cat was 16, so to DD3 there has never been a time when he wasn't around, until now.

We will be framing it and hanging it next to his favourite perch, which was our hall windowsill.

Your DD is very talented (and thoughtful)

Ski37 · 26/12/2017 18:25

Very sorry for your loss. What a beautiful painting to remember him by though. Your daughter is very talented.

Vinorosso74 · 26/12/2017 21:19

What a lovely way to remember him. That really made me well up.

OtterInDisgrace · 27/12/2017 02:12

I’m so sorry to hear this, Topseyt.

It’s difficult to bear and that’s a very sweet gesture of remembrance by your daughter.

Topseyt · 27/12/2017 09:35

Thank you again.

I have seen a nice urn that I will be ordering for when we get his ashes back. It is just like an ornament, is in the shape of a cat and can be placed on his favourite windowsill too, so that then he will be home again and in his rightful place, with DD3's painting on the wall beside it.

Feels right somehow. The empty windowsill just doesn't look right anymore somehow.
