Cat climbing on christmas tree

We have a four month old kitten and have just got the christmas tree out. As I should have know, and expected, she is obsessed with the tree, climbing it, nibbling on the decorations , etc. There isn't anywhere else to put it other than to place it in a room where we won't see the tree. Or shut her out of the room all the time. Any tips? Do I say goodbye to the tree or pack it away?!! Help.

Aw your pics are so cute, they'd make great Xmas cards! Xmas Smile

RMC123 · 03/12/2017 19:36

Every single year! Very interesting when they both try to get up at once!

Our tree has spent the last 6 Christmas' inside the playpen (to keep all the decorations in one corner) tied to the wall and ceiling (to stop the bloody animals knocking it down).
2 years ago, even that didn't work, as, between them they'd managed to split the tree in pieces, so I came down to 2 bits of tree on the floor, one of them outside the playpen, baubles everywhere, and the top of the tree swinging slightly from the ceiling.

Photo fail!! Will try again

They sat like this for ages.

Please note the bent branches and hardly any decorations due to multiple climbs, it became normal very quickly to have a cat sat in the tree.

I had two decorations left by Christmas day and he brought the whole thing down on boxing day, at which point I gave up.

I also had to remove the lights after the first 24 hours for fear of electrocution or strangulation. Be careful if you do have a climber.

I'm hoping he'll have lost interest this year!

I have 5 cats and they are so good, but recently added a new kitten, about 4 months old and she is the spawn of Satan - in a lovely way, but my tree doesn't stand a chance. She already is murdering the tinsel lol, this is going to be a fun Christmas. Of course she is a bould tabby brat too

RMC123 · 03/12/2017 20:06

trying again from the laptop!

Fuckers. All bad bad fuckers. I’m dying at these pictures.

When our vet was a kitten the little bastard took down a 10 foot real tree. Smashed ornaments, water and needles EVERYWHERE.

He still launches himself at them occasionally 5 years later.

venellopevonschweetz · 03/12/2017 20:22

Well I was hankering after a cat when we no longer have our elderly dog, this thread has made my mind up,

Just no.

RicottaPancakes · 03/12/2017 20:56

Oh dear! We are collecting a kitten next week....

Bluelonerose · 03/12/2017 21:22

1st year with 2 here too.
Tree not up yet but considering I'm convinced they are part ferral and have already destroyed a pair of curtains.
I don't hold out much hope for my poor old tree.

MimpiDreams · 04/12/2017 15:54

Cats are natural tree critters, of course they're going to climb it. I've given up trying to defend mine. I just rehang everything on a daily basis. Kitty wants to enjoy Christmas too.

Bummybum · 04/12/2017 17:51

It’s not about rehanging it’s about the fuckers taking the entire tree down and smashing everything. Angry

sunshinesupermum · 04/12/2017 18:15

Alex that is THE best cat in a Xmas tree I've seen - thanks for the giggle!

Heaven knows what our new kitten will get up to when our tree goes up.

Alexindisguise · 04/12/2017 19:52

Make sure you post pictures sunshine

I was still fishing baubles out of unlikely places in March thanks to the cat.

I get a real tree and she treats its water as an alternative if she can't be bothered walking to her dish in the next room.

We have a few spray bottles and have tried putting her off by spraying, but she gets very defiant at the first whiff of Fraser fir.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/12/2017 20:34

We leave a bauble out all year now, can't fight the tide.

Acrosstheuniverse123 · 05/12/2017 01:22

Loving all the pictures. Honestly, try spraying them with water , it really works!
