Had to have lovely boy put to sleep

Devastated. We had our beautiful big daft boy for 5 years. He came from a rescue centre when he was 7 and was the most placid daft old twit. He's been perfectly well all this time but suddenly developed breathing problems on Tuesday. By yesterday he was struggling so much that we took him to the cat clinic where they stayed him, found a lot of fluid and a possible mass and gently suggested he wouldn't get well. The decision was dreadful and all of us, but especially me and dh are absolutely devastated. I know we did the right thing and he would have suffered had we tried to keep him alive but it's just awful. I don't know why I'm posting really. Just want to offload. Miss him just miss him

I'm so, so sorry. Of course you did the right thing. Yes it's awful. But at least you gave him a wonderful life and happiness and he will have known he was safe and loved.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 16/09/2017 20:14

Thank you. It's so much harder than I ever thought. We had cats when I was younger and I was sad of course but I dunno, he was just so much a part of us. I've googled till I'm blue in the face about fluid in the lungs and could we have saved him... I know we couldn't but it still hurts so much. Apologies for rambling!

Really sorry for your loss, I feel your pain. We lost our boy last month and I cried about it again today. Different circumstances but it happened really quickly. The house is so quiet without him even though there's 2 adults and a child in it! I think some animals, like some humans, leave a great impression on us. Big hugs Flowers

NotTheQueen · 16/09/2017 21:56

Sending you big, big hugs... it's an awful decision to be faced with, but you did everything from a place of love. It would have been selfish to prolong his pain and you were generous in realising his need to go was bigger than your need for him to stay
❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thank you so much. He really was one of the family. Daft tubby silly boy.

I'm so sorry.
I think it's just lovely you took on an older cat and let him have a happy home where he was loved and wanted.

It was the little noises I missed when our first cat died, it was so quiet, took us a year to refill it with cat noises.

Take care. I'm glad your cat had a family who thought they were wonderful.

Big big hugs. It is so hard loosing them. There is a comforting poem and website called Rainbow Bridge which helps at this hard time. Xx

I know exactly how you're feeling (had mine PTS three weeks ago), but it does get better. I still really miss him, and I was in tears again when the vets sent a condolence card. I still expect him to be waiting for me when I come downstairs each morning, but no. The house feels really empty and even next door's lovely cats can't fill the gap he's left.

Sorry for your loss, OP. They are amazing creatures.

DavetheCat2001 · 17/09/2017 11:34

Massive un-mnetty hugs OP. It is devastating but you 100% did the right thing for your boy. It's hard on us, but so much kinder to them as they can't tell us how much pain they are in and they rely on us to make the right decisions for them.

We had to take the awful decision to have our lovely boy Dave (my user namesake) down a couple of years ago as his kidneys just suddenly started to fail. OH sat with him and it was awful, but again totally the right thing to do.

You gave him a fab life and were kind to the end Flowers

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/09/2017 13:06

I don't think the vet would have suggested pts as the first option if they thought he would get better.

You did the right thing & I'm so sorry you had to.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 17/09/2017 14:29

Does it sound callous to want another one soon?

OP posts:
Piewraith · 17/09/2017 14:46

It's not callous at all. He brought you so much happiness and why wouldn't you want to experience that again.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/09/2017 14:51

No, there's a lot of cats out there needing loving homes.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 17/09/2017 14:52

Thanks. We think so. 🐱

So sorry Flowers

I don't think it's too soon at all. After LastCat was put to sleep at 17 there was a huge gaping hole in the home and I was at the rescue place 'just to look' 2 days later, then brought PolterCat home 2 days after that. He's a very different cat to her but has brought us enormous joy.

DavetheCat2001 · 17/09/2017 15:56

We've just last weekend adopted Rosie after a 3 year gap.

She's awesome and it's so nice to have a catty friend again. Go for it OP. As a pp said there are so many lovely cats looking for a good home Easter Smile

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/09/2017 17:39

I don't think what we'd do without a furry despot ruling over us. Even on holiday I get up at 7am.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 17/09/2017 18:08

As apart of my job, I have to take a young man to do his volunteering at the blue cross tomorrow. This is where we got cat all those years ago. I have a horrible feeling I may be choosing again. Feel terribly guilty

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 17/09/2017 18:13

You'll be giving an adult cat a good home though.

Gottalovesummer · 17/09/2017 18:16

Firstly, sending you hugs for your loss.0it's really heartbreaking, but you gave him a second chance and a loving, stable, safe home. I hope you can take comfort from that
And please don't feel guilty, they'll be another furry one who'll also be waiting for a second chance at a loving home. Follow your heart and big hugs again for your loss.

Polter · 17/09/2017 18:26

Don't feel guilty Flowers

PolterCat came from the Blue Cross, he made me laugh when I was still so sad, not a bad reason to choose a new cat.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 17/09/2017 18:50

I will keep you all updated. Thanks so much for your kind words. It's just such a massive loss. He was ( seemed) fine this time last week, now he's gone 😢
