Trend of claw covers

‘Cruel’ cat owners criticised amid growing trend of fitting pets with fake nails to show off on social media | London Evening Standard www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/cruel-cat-owners-criticised-amid-growing-trend-of-fitting-pets-with-fake-nails-to-show-off-on-social-a3634576.html

Just saw this and my thoughts were WTF?! I mean why would you do this to your already beautiful cat?

OP posts:

But it is an alternative to declawing, just like training your cat to use a scratch post and clipping it's claws is also an alternative.

What evidence is there that the claw caps hurt cats?

JigglyTuff · 15/09/2017 07:27

Cats need to retract their claws. That's their usual state. Putting claw covers on prevents them from doing that.

How is that difficult to understand? Confused

pufflepup · 15/09/2017 07:28

I think cats ruining furniture is just part of cat ownership if I'm honest. We have a scratching post (which they use) and they still do it to the sofa too.

KinKinKitten · 15/09/2017 07:28

But if you properly fit them then it shouldn't stop them retracting their claws (according to the website anyway - is that just a lie?)

JigglyTuff · 15/09/2017 07:31

Did you read that article I posted?

KinKinKitten · 15/09/2017 07:35

I did read the article Jiggly Tuff but it contradicts the reviews I've read of the claw covers which say that the cat still displays it's normal behaviour just doesn't damage anything. So I don't know what to believe. The article also seems a bit confused because it says they're not sure how long the cat endured the claw caps but the way the caps work and the way cats claws are it wouldn't have been longer than the length of time for the nail sheath to naturally shed, right? Unless they'd been glued on improperly.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 15/09/2017 07:38

Would it stop them being able to kill small animals? If it did then they should all be fitted with them.

And makes them vulnerable to being killed themselves as they use their claws for self defence and to help them escape.

I think cats only partially retract their claws though so something on the very end probably wouldn't hurt them. The ones in that look awful though Sad.

I might get some and threaten Leroy with them when he gets careless with his claws!!! Grin

It's a stupid trend IMO which absolutely comes from a place where it's normal to declaw cats. BTW - "declawing" is horrific and involves amputating the end of the toes at the first knuckle. Cats then walk around on the raw wounds without anaesthetic until this is healed. I think it's a disgusting practice and any product which is claiming to be "an alternative" or "better" is just perpetuating myths that declawing is a normal thing. Thankfully it's never been allowed in this country. So any "alternative to declawing" being sold here is pure marketing.

They don't need claw covers. They don't need their claws clipping either. Their claws serve an actual purpose and if you are so horrified by the idea of a cat scratching your furniture or killing wildlife then you shouldn't get a cat.

FWIW, they tend to scratch less when allowed to go outside and given appropriate materials to scratch on, then you can discourage them from using the furniture, but you're still going to get some scratching happening while they are learning.

BertieBotts · 15/09/2017 07:50

For a PP who mentioned clipping claws to prevent cats from injuring each other - you're potentially making the issue worse, because a cut claw is blunter and more likely to splinter than a sharp claw. Cats will fight and play and sometimes draw blood on each other but as long as they're not regularly having huge fights it's not generally a concern for serious injury, especially kittens should be left to it, as they will grow out of it/learn their boundaries between themselves. If they are regularly fighting badly it's probably kinder to rehome one TBH than to use claw covers, as they can still injure with a bite if they so wish, and constant fighting with serious intent can be distressing even if the claws are covered.

JigglyTuff · 15/09/2017 09:13

You should take the kitten to a shelter @kinkinkitten. You're not a fit cat owner

Barbaric and should be and. Almost as bad as declawing. If you can't trim the claws then take them to the vet for it.

BeepBeepMOVE · 15/09/2017 09:29

Just don't get a cat if you can't deal with it behaving like a cat.

Orangebird69 · 15/09/2017 09:32

If you put these on your cats claws, you're a cunt that shouldn't have cats as pets. This makes me so fucking angry. An alternative to declawing??????? Oh well, that's alright then. Angry

Orangebird69 · 15/09/2017 09:37

And it's totally possible to have cats (I've got 5) and have them not scratch your furniture - my sofa is totally in tact. Get a big cat tree. Or just accept the fact that cats scratch.

Wow some of you are rude. Clearly this isn't something you're able to have a discussion about. I'll look elsewhere.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/09/2017 11:46

Kinkin, yes I'm agreed we are going to be rude when it comes to something we feel is cruel and unnecessary. Cat welfare is paramount.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/09/2017 11:46

*afraid. Not agreed.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/09/2017 11:54

I agree about claw covers, but I don't agree with a previous poster who said that cats don't need their claws clipped. Not all do but for some cats it's necessary.

BertrandRussell · 15/09/2017 11:57

"Not all do but for some cats it's necessary."
Really? What sort of cats?
