Thank you everyone- he's called Tybalt and he had the loveliest nature; such a easygoing cat. Haven't told DDs yet as they're at school/work.
He wasn't a wanderer he just liked being at home, sleeping and eating. No idea why he went on the road this morning. I'm guilt-tripping myself that if I hadn't let him out while it was still dark he would still be here, but I did that every morning

Really sorry for your loss. I had to have my beautiful (cat) friend put to sleep yesterday and it's just awful, isn't it?

So sorry. What a lovely boy. I think the same happened to ours in June but we never found him. I beat myself up too because I let him out early as he was wahwahing. You mustn't blame yourself. Cats are meant to go out.

I'm so sorry. I can't imagine what you're going through. I have a cat I adore and she loves being out. Cats are meant to go out so not your fault at all. Sounds like he had a great life with a loving family.

I'm so, so sorry OP. Please dont blame yourself. As Green says, cats love being out exploring in the dark. Ours hate being in at night so much, we've started letting them out. Please be gentle on yourself x

Thanks again- he did have a very happy, albeit short, life and would have hated being kept in.
Zebra - really sorry to hear about your cat - it's such a hard decision to make, but I think it's important to remember you are putting your cat first and not letting them suffer

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, he was a very handsome chap. And I know it is an odd thing to say but at least you know what has happened to him, I know when my now late Girl went missing for a week my mind went into overdrive imagining what terrible things could have happened to her. It is going to be awful telling your children, but there is a little comfort to be had in having a definite closure rather than uncertainty .
