What I wasn't expecting when I got cats

I love my 2 kittens. I thought I would when I saw their adorable faces in the ad, and I knew I did when we met them for the first time.

I was expecting the hassle, all the cleaning poo from litter trays, furry butts and little paws, all the washing cat dishes, feeding them, buying food, buying litter. Taking them to the vets, grooming them, doing flea and worm treatments.

What I wasn't expecting was how much they love me back.

I thought cats were aloof. There's all the jokes about humans being cat slaves, etc. I've never had a pet cat but I have been around them, admittedly farm cats that would come for a fuss and friends' cats.

I was wrong, or I just lucked out with my two soppy sausages. I was expecting to love them. I was not expecting them to enrich my life in return.

Very soppy I know but Siggy is lying asleep on my lap, he put his head on my arm, did a big sigh and now he's dreaming with kitten snores and twitchy paws...

I love it when they do little snores.
Mine is so happy to see me every morning she stands on her hind legs to meet my hand stroking her. Sometimes she stands up so tall she keeps going and slides gently over onto her little fluffy bum.

BubbleAnimal · 05/09/2017 21:54

Mine watch out the window for us, as soon as they hear our car they are there - as soon as we walk down the front path they are at the door. They cry for the children of a morning if they aren't up/here, and are the most loving cats ever!

ememem84 · 05/09/2017 21:54

Oh I know what you mean.
This is catface.

She is like a shadow. She supervises everything I do and mrrrrps in approval. If I go to the bathroom she waits outside and if I'm in there for too long she meows and scratches at the door. I'm pregnant at present so not sure if this is why...

ememem84 · 05/09/2017 21:55

Would help if I attached pictures.

Princess Mog is cuddled up, holding my hand. Been like this for an hour...I need to pee but I can't disturb her!

My cat Boo - as soon as I come in he closes his eyes and lifts his head to me- confident I will give him a fuss. My friend visited and was amazed by it- she only ever had dogs and couldn't believe cats could be so responsive.

Leaningtoweroflisa · 06/09/2017 18:49

SQUEEEEEE all the cat pics, they are all so gorgeous. Is it wrong I am now thinking of the cats on this thread as the love cats and humming the song?!

Sitting down fanning myself after the trauma of worming them just now. Gah. Siggy was not happy but seemed to swallow it. Starry spat it out twice (one a comedy ptwoo that pinged off the floor) and seriously considered mauling me. Bless him he didn't. I felt so bad I've given them both the evil cat milk that they look be but that gives them the shits.

Flea drops tonight 😱 Think found flea dirt on starry, dunno, do fleas prefer white cats? He was tormented as a wee kit and it took so long for him to pass the 1kg mark with me constantly flea combing him but I thought I'd rid them of fleas. Ho hum. 2 days over the drops date at most!

Here he is showing off his increasing gingery-ness by posing in the bath

My boys were so amazing , they gave me soo much love and empathy . They are both sadly gone .. my girl cat gives nothing .. I really want to get a kitten ( or two ) but I want them to love me back . I'm afraid I'll be stuck with one or two cats who hate me for 20 years !!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/09/2017 19:31

I haven't admitted this before but I cried when we brought Harry home as I was convinced I wouldn't be able to look after him and shouldn't have adopted him. We've had a few mishaps over the years and I blame myself when something goes wrong but I think we're doing ok.

DH laughs at me as, when I come in, Harry walks into the bathroom and I go in whether I need to go or not! He even did it after he'd reacted to sedation. He couldn't walk in a straight line but was determined to go 'wee wees' with me (he knows that and gets up and heads for the bathroom if I say it Blush)

These are my two. The ginger one is my shadow around the house. Follows me everywhere. He's quite skittish and jumpy, doesn't like loud noises or sudden movements around him. He is definitely my cat. Doesn't really like my husband, although he (the cat) is becoming more tolerant. He loves me though. He lies on me when I go to bed with his face centimetres from mine. That's such a trusting thing for a cat to do. They are predators so their eyes are the most important thing to them. To put his face so close to mine like that just shows that he trusts me and he knows I trust him. I adore him. The way he looks at me, he just has such love in his eyes. He's my fluffy boy.
The black one isn't quite as loving, but she has her moments. She's anyone's for a Dreamie and an ear scratch.

I'm really in the bad books now, they've both been flea combed and drops on the back of the neck...

raspberry sig was doing that to me earlier, the lying on my chest with his face near mine, it's just heart melting that adoring gaze. Cat stereotyping would say 'he's working out which bit of you to eat first' but you can feel the love coming off them.

pink yes I get accompanied to the toilet. Aww bless him going with you all wobbly.

jessie Sad but might be worth the risk if you luck out?

Aw. All the snuggly kitties Smile. We went away on holiday last month, when we got home my boy cat had to sit right next to me at every opportunity with his paws on me. He is the snuggliest, cuddliest boy ever. Girl cat came in, stared at us, ate a bowl of food and stalked off with a 'Pffftt. You're back then. Pah'. Grin

Awwwww. So cute OP!
I too did not expect the levels of love- and especially for them to miss me and DP when we are gone. They wait at the window when we're due home.

I also did not expect to quietly come home one day and observe my gruff, bearded, Irish DP whose main hobbies are boxing and ranting, lying on the floor tickling one of their tummies saying: "oh yes, we are both ginger so we are best friends, you're the best little ginger person ever oh yes you are, I love you so much" and smooshing his face into her fur. They've brought out the soft fluffy side in him too!

Ollivander84 · 06/09/2017 22:26

Do I have to post the Ollie loving me photos again? Grin

My last cat I got as a kitten and set out to make him mine. He slept with me and used to waken me from nightmares (I was depressed) with a gentle paw to my face. He was a shameless rake, out for hours at a time, but rarely came home empty-pawed. One of his less delightful tricks was running to meet the car... I was devastated when he was run down.

CandleCat 1 and 2 were rescues and took a long time to thaw - years and years. They had no idea how to play - still don't actually - and CandleCat 2 still finds it difficult to lie on my lap, but he comes through of an evening and stands beside me, or on my lap and puts his paws on my chest and purrs in my face. CandleCat 1 is more likely to be around the house and will come and sit on my lap for a while before jumping off and leaving without a backward glance. He does enjoy a cuddle, whereas CandleCat 2 hates to be picked up.

They will be 15 in a couple of months and CandleCat 2 in particular has developed a few health problems and is generally looking a bit fragile, although he is out almost constantly, still. I haven't seen him yet this morning, which always worries me.

We have two rescue cats, both indoor/outdoor cats (we're in the UK). One, Bennie, was a feral kitten. He's now very affectionate, but not a lap cat. He likes to be in the same room as me and be stroked. The other is Mr Spock, a totally mad B&W cat. I do feel strange standing in the garden shouting 'Mr Spock!'.
