Cat food to get/avoid

AtSea1979 · 31/08/2017 21:16

There was a thread a while back saying avoid whiskers etc as it has cereals in. What should I feed my cat?

I should point out that my boy does liberally augment his diet of dry food with an assortment of home caught "game".

LapdanceShoeshine · 01/09/2017 22:53

Mine have Felix pouches (used to be AGAIL but I've happily discovered they actually leave less of the basic cheaper pouches which are chunks rather than scraps). They lick all the jelly off first but come back later for the chunks.

They also have Royal Canin neutered female biscuits. 10kg bag from zooplus isn't too dear. I used to leave some down all day but realised 1 cat was eating hardly any wet food so now I just put the bics down in the evening.

They are all healthy & very glossy. One has bad teeth but not from diet - she's very young & has a reabsorption condition. I have to see about having them all extracted Sad. The other 2 are fine.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/09/2017 08:04

Harry has a Country Hunter pouch for breakfast, a Hi Life tuna pouch for lunch and either a Natures Menu pouch or Meowing Heads tin for dinner. No dry food unfortunately as he has an unstable jaw. He was on dry only for years as I thought it was good for his teeth but sadly not, he had to have a load removed.

IDoDaChaCha · 02/09/2017 08:14

Have to add that my two dogs and cat are well aware: if they don't eat the (good quality grain free) food provided- I won't be replacing it with something else. I don't pander to 'I don't feel like eating that'. Don't then! My toy poodle used to do it when he was younger and I tied myself in knots trying to accommodate. Then I realised: he won't starve himself to death. No healthy animal will refuse food to the point of starvation. It's amazing how they can control you if you let them.

littlemissM92 · 02/09/2017 08:21

Mine has aldi pouches breakfast and tea and a Morrisons brand little tin of pate at about 10pm biscuits always on offer but doesn't eat them much have tried various brands but loves his wet food

He has little bits of meat fish if left over from our meal occasionally.

SecondaryQuandary · 02/09/2017 08:23

Our cat has some teeth missing from an accident, so has Hills T\D dental dry mixed with Royal Canin outdoor, plus wet food either Sheba, Waitrose, Sains TTD or Encore.

SecondaryQuandary · 02/09/2017 08:25

Oh and he also dines daily at his friends house over the road - dry food, not sure of brand Hmm

DumbledoresApprentice · 02/09/2017 08:25

I know she won't starve herself but at the prices I'm paying for the food I buy I'm not
willing to chuck plate after plate of untouched Lily's kitchen or Applaws or Nature's menu in the bin. She just doesn't like the same thing over and over so I buy a mixture and then roatate them. It also means that she eats a range of stuff so I can buy what's on offer rather than being stuck with one brand.

IDoDaChaCha · 02/09/2017 08:33

DumbledoresApprentice mine has the odd day when he tries it on pestering me to open a new tin when he hasn't finished his food. I ignore him and he eats it because he's hungry. Sounds like youve figured out your way of managing your cat's food. I don't follow the feeding guide on the can: I put out the contents of one whole can and replace it when he's finished it, whenever that is. The dogs get the bowl to lick when it's empty and the spoon to lick when I've fed the cat. Cat food is never wasted here.

tigerdriverII · 02/09/2017 08:36

Ours have Canagen: high protein content- changed from Wellbeloved when realised how much cereal is in it.

They supplement their diet liberally with rodents, rabbits and squirrels.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/09/2017 08:40

I have to 'pander' to Harry as he has his kidney meds added to his food so, if he won't eat it it comes up and is replaced.

Doesn't the food get dry and horrible if you put a whole can down and leave it? I know Harry wouldn't eat it in one go and it would get dry and manky.

dementedpixie · 02/09/2017 08:42

I put smaller amounts down more often as it does go dry and horrible if left out for a few hours.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/09/2017 08:46

That's why I prefer pouches or small tins. I wouldn't want to eat something that had been out all day so I don't expect him to!

IDoDaChaCha · 02/09/2017 08:49

Doesn't the food get dry and horrible if you put a whole can down and leave it? nope. Bozita has no cereal and doesn't dry out easily.

NannyRed · 02/09/2017 08:53

I give my cats Harringtons kibble. They really like it and it's one of only a few kibble that my Persian boy can eat without getting the squits.

This article is interesting www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-124700/My-cats-turned-fussy-eater.html

"As long the vet rules out any medical problem, it may simply be a dominance problem. Quite often cats like this have learnt that by refusing to eat they can force their owner into giving them a tastier snack. The situation is the same as a child who refuses to eat anything other than pizzas, and the treatment is the same, too! You must stand your ground and remain firm. Insisting that your cat changes her diet may be met with indignation, but you should persevere, knowing that you are doing the best for your cat.

Mine get a mixture. They used to get James' Well beloved and Applaws but they started refusing to eat it. They're quite fussy and I do pander to them. They're obsessed with the creamy soups from Whiskas at the moment. They also like the chicken terrine from Aldi.

They get the odd can of Butchers, although they prefer good in gravy. Does anyone know if butchers do cat food in gravy?

I feed them Jolleyes own dry food, or sometimes the Lidl premium type.

cafeaulaitpourvous · 02/09/2017 09:02

Gourmet perle - gravy only and only the seafood or fish collection.

And NOT kept in fridge.

And if cold outside a drop of hot water in it stirred up to release the gravy more and warm it up slightly.

When feeling a bit frail - gourmet cat soup as a little extra

Puss lasted 22 years.... fussy little bugger

DumbledoresApprentice · 02/09/2017 09:06

I also don't mind pandering a bit. We don't have any children and our cat is our company at home. She lives indoors which makes her a bit more high maintenance than an indoor/outdoor cat. We've installed cat shelves and she has to be actively played with every day. She has to be groomed pretty regularly too because she's a longhaired breed. That's fine by me. I have the time and I quite enjoy having a cat that's a bit more needy, she's very much a people cat and that's what we wanted. We got her from a rescue as an adult and we were told she was a cat that liked a lot of attention and time. There were other much more independently minded cats to choose but that wasn't what we wanted. The other two cats that we considered were deaf or three-legged.

Catface has royal canin appetite control for neutered cats. She also has a water fountain which she likes.

The vet checked her previously and had recommended the RC stuff. On her most recent trip vet said how well she was doing she was a feral about 18 months ago and in a bit of a bad way. We took her in almost a year ago and she has done so so well.

I buy the biscuits on Amazon as a subscribe and save. £9 something for a 2kg bag every month/6 weeks. Way cheaper than in the shops.

oldbirdy · 02/09/2017 09:31

Ours will only eat gourmet perle. Not even Sheba cuts it. Or any of the high end no cereal brands. Bit less fussy with dry food. However, She has just refused James Well beloved grain free and as I bought a large bag it is now feeding the local stray boy. She is noshing down Purina One instead.

rockinnrollin · 02/09/2017 09:37

My cat will only eat Felix pouches. I alternate between the As Good As It Looks range and the standard chunks, as Sainsbury's always have them on offer. She won't eat dry food at all. She's very healthy and a good weight. I put half a pouch down at a time as she prefers to eat little and often.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/09/2017 09:48

Royal Canin Persian dry food and a pouch on a Sunday as a treat. They won't eat the more expensive pouches but wiskars gets wolfed down!

Toddlerteaplease · 02/09/2017 09:52

Emenem try Zooplus for Royal Canin. It's much cheaper than anywhere else. I buy a 12kg bag and it lasts about 3 months.
