Cat food to get/avoid

There was a thread a while back saying avoid whiskers etc as it has cereals in. What should I feed my cat?

I am interested in this too.. I can't afford something very expensive but want to get something better than Whiskers if it is as bad as people say..

shushpenfold · 01/09/2017 19:18

I use royal canon dry food. If you hunt around on the internet you can usually get a good deal on 2x10g bags which then last an absolute age. Good for them and good for teeth.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 01/09/2017 20:21

I use Sainsbury's own dry cat food. I've given my cat more expensive options but this is the one she prefers.

When overseas, I had a cat who only ever ate tinned wet food - she had to have all her back teeth removed and the vet said it was due to her wet food only diet. I felt terrible!

EachandEveryone · 01/09/2017 20:32

You can't win. Butchers Choice is meant to be good and easily available but they are big tins. Sheba mine likes and is often on offer. Sainsbury's Taste the Difference wet and dry both seem to be good quality.

Polter · 01/09/2017 21:39

Go Cat dry food seems to be particularly problematic for male cats. I personally would avoid any cheap dried food. Butchers tins are a good cheap option on a tight budget. PolterCat has a mix of decent dry (he's not fussy and Zooplus often have offers) and whatever pouches are on offer.

ElizabethShaw · 01/09/2017 22:14

I don't think you have to avoid wiskas if your cat is OK on it - my mum's cats are perfectly fine with standard wet and dry food. My cat unfortunately shits everywhere if she eats cereal so we give her Butchers and a bit of Applaws dry food (she prefers this but it is bloody expensive!).

BubbleAnimal · 01/09/2017 22:16

My cats are fussy buggers. They don't care about price or quality, they just know what they like. And then change their mind over night sometimes Hmm

We used to have butchers choice, but they went off that.

We now have Felix meaty pouches, with go cat indoor cat biscuits. We switched to indoor cat because of hair balls and sickness, and they've helped immensely.

dementedpixie · 01/09/2017 22:19

I give mine AVA dry food from pets at home as it has decent meat content and no cereal. I tried decent wet food but they didn't eat it for long so they get gourmet perle, Sheba fine flakes and select slices

Weedsnseeds1 · 01/09/2017 22:20

To be honest, I think it boils down to what your cat will eat. I have had one dustbin cat who are anything, including curry, bread, olives... Others typically fussy in that they would go off a tried and tested product overnight and current cat who eats one dried food in one flavour and that is it!

IDoDaChaCha · 01/09/2017 22:25

Cats are obligate carnivores who consume only meat. Cereals are particularly unhealthy for them. My cat nearly died of struvite crystals from eating dry food; cats are not big drinkers and get a lot of their water intake from their food. Which is great when it's meat. Not so when it's kibble, especially that made of cereals. On vet advice I now feed a wet (meat) only food. I buy Bozita which is all meat no cereals m.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/canned_cat_food_pouches/bozita/bozita_canned_cat_food/359330 works out about £1 a day buying the canned food saver deal. My cat loves biscuits and tries to sneak the dog's food (dry wheat free). Cats do like dry food but it can be extremely dangerous for them.

dementedpixie · 01/09/2017 22:28

I used to give bozita (kitten version) but it had too much jelly and they went off it. The dry food I give doesn't have cereals. I like to give a mix of wet and dry.

thecatneuterer · 01/09/2017 22:28

Butchers Classic (not Choice - that's dog food) is cheap and cereal free. It's what all mine eat. Our vets recommend it.

ElizabethShaw · 01/09/2017 22:31

I wish Butchers did smaller tins/pouches - my cat won't eat from a tin that's been open/in the fridge too long and only eats 1/2 tin a day Hmm

dementedpixie · 01/09/2017 22:31

also had too much jelly for my kittens and they wouldn't eat it

FrogsLegs31 · 01/09/2017 22:35

Depends on your budget but I feed Applaws wet food and A small amount of Meowingheads dry food Smile

IDoDaChaCha · 01/09/2017 22:36

My cat is a big boy (same size as my toy poodle) and is now officially a 'dustbin cat' after becoming outdoor a few years ago so he probably will eat stuff fussy cats wont. He also hunts mice and birds (didn't know until the vet pointed out bird bones in his stomach on the x-ray he was being examined). The pet food industry is quite unscrupulous about making profit no matter what. Even vets sell cat food containing cereals.

TizzyDongue · 01/09/2017 22:37

Mine has James Wellbeloved dry. He does drink a good bit of water though - ever since he was a teeny kitten he has drank just after eating.

He gets some meat or fish if we have some that's not been marinated or seasoned (and there's some left over!)

BubbleAnimal · 01/09/2017 22:38

I always manage to write choice not classic!

I have two cats, so the size of the can wasn't an issue. Until I was throwing it all away again because they decided they didn't like it on a Monday anymore.

I have so many half used boxes of Tina and pouches. They are the fussiest things going.

They have been happy with Felix for a few months now though thankfully.

semideponent · 01/09/2017 22:38

My female cat had problems on 2 x Felix sachets + top up Go Cat - gingivitis and lacklustre fur. I've changed her to 1 x Felix sachet + top up Royal Canin dry food, which we get more cheaply through the vet. She's doing much better.

BubbleAnimal · 01/09/2017 22:39

Tina? Tins!

dementedpixie · 01/09/2017 22:41

I don't think royal canin is as good as they make it out to be and its expensive for what you get

DumbledoresApprentice · 01/09/2017 22:41

My cat loves dry food, although I would rather feed her mainly wet. I only give her high meat, grain free dry and I make sure she has at least one sachet of wet a day, although she will sometimes turn her nose up at the wet. I have to constantly rotate brands and varieties or she just refuses it. At the minute she's on Tesco finest fish pouches and natures menu country hunter. Her food works out expensive but I can afford it and want to feed her as well as I can. She has a sensitive tummy and a very fluffy bum, not a good combination. She was fed on Whiskas when we got her from the shelter but after a notable incident that we call the "poopocalypse" we moved her onto a mostly grain-free diet. She still loves a few dreamies now and then and a couple of the foods she's ok with have rice in.

fuzzywuzzy · 01/09/2017 22:43

We give our cats applaws wet food and Royal Canin dry food.

A tin of wet food twice a day and dry food down at all times as well as water which is changed daily.

Our cats are a bit spoilt tho.

We buy cat food from zooplus.

Giraffey1 · 01/09/2017 22:45

My cats all thrived on a diet of wet and dried food, Whiskas, Purina, Felix, Sheba etc etc ... fussy wotsits hence the changing of brands. Two of them lived til about 19, and my tabby girl until about 25!

RubbishMantra · 01/09/2017 22:50

Animonda's another good wet food. Mine get Orijen dry, it's 85% meat.
