Are all cats so irrational with food?

My 5 month old kittens are driving me crazy. After much expensive trial and error with wet food I thought I had found a brand they would eat. One day they will wolf down a particular flavoured pouch then they next time they sniff at it as if it is poison and walk away. Or one will decide the other one's ( identical) bowl is better , refuse to eat hers and take his leftovers. What is it with cats?

Yep!

I have a nursing mama who really needs the calories but is very dainty with what she eats. She'll have a couple of mouthfuls from a pouch/tin and then won't touch it again.

Vet says as long as they're eating something not to worry too much!

ProperLavs · 23/08/2017 08:19

t's the waste of food that's also dong my head in.

Can you not put a little down at a time? Rather than the whole portion.

Mine can be a fuss pot, but 9 times out of ten he'll come back and eat it in an hour or so. You can get bowls that keep food chilled, or they may even prefer it at room temp.

He's also the first cat who demands attention whilst eating. If I leave the room he'll follow me out and yowl at me till I come back, like it's rude to leave the dinner table Grin

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 23/08/2017 08:31

They are dicks is why.

When we had two cats, no problem. Mac would eat anything, then move on to the other bowl. So FC had to eat quick. Now we only have FC and he's old we (dh) spoils him. Bought him posh fish in jelly pouches. Scoffed the first, turned nose up at the rest. Got him big case of mixed posh pouches, refuses to touch the fish ones. Bought him chicken whiskas and he's begging for a second serve.
Just give them half a pouch at a time and clip the pouch shut.

ProperLavs · 23/08/2017 15:45

Yes, I quickly learned only to give out part pouches at a time. The waste comes in buying food that they will happily eat for a couple of weeks so I buy jumbo pack and then they refuse it!
I have given loads to the local pdsa.
My girl cat wouldn't even touch freshly cooked chicken and fish that the vet recommended when she had a poorly tum. Went out and bought and cooked if especially. I mean what cat don't eat freshly cooked fish?
Buggers.

One of my arsehole cats won't touch ANY food unless is has a topping of some Dreamies. He needs to go the DreamyRehab!

Mrscropley · 23/08/2017 15:57

I have purrfect dcats.

Meow - open tin =eat food!!
Job done.

Grin
I do remember my dm had the most fussy dcat, several bowls all the house with various things in them. .

No way, just no. .

Allergictoironing · 23/08/2017 16:02

Mine are great - give them a range of Felix AGAIL and they are happy. But "human" food like chicken, lamb, fish or even ham? NO chance most of the time - though they have been known to accept a teeny scrap of duck or Ox Tongue just to keep me happy.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/08/2017 16:35

Mine is a furry little git! Up until Monday morning, duck was his most favourite food in the whole world and he had it for breakfast every day. He's now decided that he doesn't want duck any more and goose is now his favourite. Of course he waited until I had over 50 duck pouches before coming to that decision!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/08/2017 16:35

That should say fussy little git! Obviously he is furry but he's also fussy!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 23/08/2017 17:38

Oh and FC refuses to touch food unless he has seen it put out.
He also doesn't like prawns, salmon or tuna but does like crab. His favourite thing in the world is the melted butter after dh has crumpets. So he puts extra on.

Floralnomad · 23/08/2017 17:46

My dm has a 15 year old Ragdoll , she has more varieties of cat food pouches in her cupboard than your average supermarket . He goes off something mid bowl on a daily basis and then cries until you dish up something he wants which can mean 3/4 packs opened before you can shut him up . He will only eat chicken based cat food , it has to be very small chunk , likes gravy , hates the cat soups . The only things you can guarantee he will eat without a fuss are fish fingers ( with the coating removed) , very freshly cooked chicken cut into minute pieces and M&S prawns ( he has those every evening) . He can tell if they are the wrong prawns and will not eat them . Just imagine how much money you will waste over the years .

ProperLavs · 23/08/2017 17:56

What a nightmare rag doll! Mine are currently eating a beef felix pouch. They have previously rejected this paws down. If I put it down in front of them they stare at me. I then have to mash it with the back of a fork a few times and they start eating. They will only eat half a pouch at s time and then want the rest an hour of so later.
I have a huge bag of royal canine kitten food which is always available. They like that and it's nutritionally sound I think.

2cats my fussy one won't even eat dreamies!
She had though just finished off her brother's plate. He loves ham, she goes bonkers for tinned tuna, but more than a spoonful gives her d&v so she only has it very rarely.
When I had cats years ago I really don't remember this happening. Maybe I was just lucky?

The cat we had growing up ate anything you put down , it's pure luck . The fussy Ragdoll had 2 major bowel operations at 16 weeks and we think that's where it all went wrong , he is also an indoor cat and gets diarrhoea seemingly at will ! He has only ever vomited twice , and that was in the last year , for a long time we thought perhaps he was incapable of being sick .

iloveeverykindofcat · 23/08/2017 18:47

Bibi eats anything (ex-stray). Zara (half Abyssinian offspring of a neurotic breed champion, stunningly beautiful and very odd little cat) would prefer to live on Gourmet Perle Seaside Duo in Gravy for the rest of her life, but its not very good quality. The high quality food she will accept changes on a daily basis.

StillMedusa · 23/08/2017 22:19

I have Portia, who at 17, is the fussiest animal I have ever known.
The 'she'll eat it if she is hungry' approach has NEVER worked... she will follow me round howling and slapping me.
Today she consented to eat some very posh tiny tins of Gourmet. In gravy. Usually she hates gravy. Some days she will ONLY eat tinned tuna, or chicken or prawns. Every so often she goes off all of that and wants Morrissons cheapo pate dishes!

Luckily the other two cats are happy to eat whatever she has turned down so nothing is wasted.

She is a pain!

MiaowMix · 23/08/2017 22:41

My 2 are like this, fussy little blighters. Will eat food one day and refuse it the next Hmm.
I can feel myself going down the cat soup route. Is that a real thing or did I dream it?
My child is a bloody breeze in comparison!

ProperLavs · 24/08/2017 09:32

(Sigh) just now fussy cat has had her second portion of pouch and unfussy(ish) cat was pushing her off it so we gave him his on a separate plate. He literally jumped in the air and ran off. Into the fridge it goes.
Are these fussy cats 'breeds' or mixed breeds by any chance?Hmm

My cats are just chavs. They hate cooked chicken or raw food - preferring this horrible chicken roll from the Co-Op that is basically reconstituted and mixed with milk powder.

they will only eat fish if it has a bit of batter attached; tuna if it's the 'sandwich' mushy stuff in brine- not fresh tuna; and value ham, not carved ham.

They loathed Lily's Kitchen food much preferring Butcher's Classic. I have tried so hard to bring them up well!

Ollivander84 · 24/08/2017 13:37

The only stuff mine consistently eats is natures menu pouches and Lily's kitchen dry
He won't touch fish, unless it's tinned tuna that I'm eating. Adores scrambled eggs. Loves ham but not cheap cooked chicken slices, will only eat roast chicken
I spend a lot of time going "but you were STRAY and STARVING. For FOUR years. Don't be so bloody fussy" Hmm
