Watching my neighbour's cat dying by inches :(

I have posted about the cat before. We have fed her for years as she only gets fed if she is around at the precise second that her 'owners' come home and open their front door.

Over the last couple of months she has suddenly become skeletal, despite lots of food..I suspect hyperthyroidism and/or kidney issues. They have not taken her to the vet. Our vet won't treat cats owned by someone else or I'd have taken her ages ago.

I caught them and asked if she was getting treatment..their answer was 'oh yeah she is a bit skinny now..she's old' Today DH directly asked them if they were going to get their sick cat to the vet..and they said they would take her next week.

Tonight my adult DS1 has just come in, visibly distressed ..she is outside in the cold and wet, huddled under our bush. We have take out one of our cats baskets (wicker type with a padded cushion in for trips to the vets) and covered it with a bin liner to keep it dry. He also put out more food and water for her. She climbed straight in on wobbly legs and purred. So tonight she will be at least dry and not too cold.
I can't bring her in (my three would fight her as she used to be pretty feisty) and I don't know what else I can do, except keep feeding her and keep her as warm as we can until she dies...which I am guessing is probably days away now.

How can anyone be so bloody uncaring? :(

RIP feisty little Torty cat. I'm glad she had you, OP. She knew you cared about her Flowers

Arseholes. Absolute arseholes.
Thank goodness she had you. Flowers

Sleep tight feisty one

Oh Medusa, what a beautiful person you are! Sobbing at your final update at least in her last few hours she was loved.
As for your utter bastards of neighbours words fail me! I would do everything I could to have the other cat taken away from them.

I have now discovered they didn't go to the vets.

I'm disgusted but not surprised. They let her get to a state of unconsciousness without having her seen to, of course they weren't going to bother themselves taking her 15 minutes away to a vet and then pay to have her PTS. Far easier just to let her die. That's probably why she was outside in the first place. They probably let her out hoping she would take herself off somewhere they wouldn't have to watch her die. Fuckers Angry thanks for trying OP and for making her last conscious moments comfortable ones. My cat died in the vets on his way to surgery and it breaks my heart that his last moments weren't nice comfortable ones in my arms knowing that I hadn't just abandoned him to these strangers who were doing scary things to him. Sad

That's awful. What arseholes your neighbours are.

But you're so lovely for feeding her for so long and for being so kind on her last day Flowers

Just read the update. How heartbreaking. You did your best Medusa. How can your neighbours be so cruel to another living creature.

PinkPuffin · 20/08/2017 21:33

This has almost made me cry! What a horrible story, and what a lovely person you are! Give your own cats a good scritch tonight!
