We came home tonight to find our gorgeous 10 year old boy dead on the floor. He'd obviously been in distress and we're devastated. Vet said it could've been poisoning or heart attack, but it looks like he was asleep on his favourite chair, then started to salivate, possibly had a seizure then died.

We are racked with guilt that we weren't here and he died alone. Luckily our 4 year old was asleep in the car and didn't see but we'll need to explain tomorrow. She asks a lot of questions so not sure how much to tell her. I think even if we tell her we found him in the living room it might stir up bad thoughts for her, but how to be truthful yet vague? Our other cat died 2 years ago and she still talks about him and how she misses him.

We're just in shock and I can't stop crying. Our poor, crazy, grumpy, determined, soppy, loud fluffball. We'll be finding his fur for the rest of our days, I think.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, just needed to tell people who'd understand and could maybe advise.

I kno this post is older, but I can totally relate. My heart is broken right now because I lost my beautiful Lilly yesterday. Thought she was sleeping, but she was gone. Oh how this hurts my heart. I miss her presence every second I'm in the house. My heart is broken because I will never see her beautiful little face again💔. She was only 7 years old, and had no health problems.

Oh I'm sorry all. I came over to this forum to ask about behavioural changes in near 13 year old (She's suddenly become a lap cat) and this thread petrified me and immediately ran to find her!

It's heartbreaking to lose them Flowers

So sorry OP.

My darling cat also did this last year.....it’s coming up for a year since it happened.

We are almost certain that he had Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy ...something many of his breed (Ragdoll) can have. Thankfully there is now a test for this so proper breeders test their breeding cats to ensure they are clear of it. However my boy was too old for this to have been in place when he was being bred.

The on,y thing that comforts me is that the death is usually sudden and involves very little suffering. My boy had been on my lap and purring 10 mins before he died. I went up to fold washing and came down to find him dead on the floor. Sad

My only comfort is that it was quick and might well have been the same for your boy too.

So sorry for your loss. It is just awful to lose a pet. Take comfort from the good life that you gave him and try to think of the happy times. You will feel rough for a while, we had our last cat PTS in May he was 18 and I still miss him so much. Take it easy over the next few days. Flowers
