Any tips on keeping your abode smelling not of cat?

I don't know if it's the weather or the fact that I'm in a flat and I now have two. I've been out 16 hours today and it's been emotionally draining all I want is a cuddle off my babies and a glass of red. Instead I'm emptying bins, washing cushions and throws and disinfecting everywhere. Funnily it's the hallway where the baby doesn't go that hits you as soon as you walk in. There's no air in there. I think it's the food. Even the dry food smells through the packets! How do you keep on top of it?

I dont know but as I only got my two furbabies on Saturday, I'm watching with interest.

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 00:37

One tip is to take the poo out as soon as theyve done it!

Are you sure it isn't spray/pee?

avamiah · 06/07/2017 00:51

It's because you have two that you are noticing the smell .
We have 3 cats, 2 never come home at night but the little kitten well he is 12 months old now always comes in at night and he sleeps in his bed downstairs and always has a fresh litter tray at night but by 7 am it smells strong .
I use febreez and dettol spray.
It does the job .
We live in a house though and the cats are out in the day and so is the litter tray .

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 00:52

Yeah its like damp cat! I remember Daphne having that smell when she was a baby and was sick with the change of food. How often shoukd i be washing my cushion covers? They dont sleep on them when im up but they could when im at work.

How soon do you throw wet food put and would it help if i didnt leave the dry out all the time?

I use Mr Muscle Pet Odour destroyer- it breaks down the odours rather than masks them. Works amazingly on cat pee and smells of fresh washing plus can be used on pet beds and cushions.

avamiah · 06/07/2017 01:00

I change the litter tray when it has been used and clean it with dettol spray and boiling water then put fresh litter in .
I buy it from Tesco or Asda its only cheap but have had no problems.

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 01:01

Ill invesr in one. The baby is 16 weeks she wont be goint out til xmas. We are in a flat so the big one goes out in 30 minute bursts, theres no overnight shenanigans i would worry too much. Im sure its partly the fact theres no wind blowing. Ill have to stop freefeeding them as well.

I wish I knew.... But the reason our hall smells is that we get foxes in the front garden, then our cats pee by the front door. If you are in a flat, maybe it is happening when you are out and someone walks past the front door in the corridor and your cats feel the need t defend your home for you????

I'm definitely going to try that Mr Muscle stuff

I hate the smells, but out beauties are worth it!

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 01:29

Well the baby has just thrown up in the litter box so maybe that's part of it.

avamiah · 06/07/2017 01:32

My kitten was sick but on the kitchen floor as he had been eating the litter.
I had changed the litter and it was brown so I think he thought it was his dry food.
He only did it the one time.

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 01:40

Shes done it twice now and shes had the runs as well. I introduced posh food applepaws and it hasnt suited her at all.ive never seen a cat being sick before it was horrific the sound!

We have two also. I noticed when they were babies that they did smell funny and the litter tray was awful, despite cleaning it regularly. The smell disappeared as they got older. One of mine has an anal gland issue, and that stinks occasionally. No smell like it, disgusting fishy smell. Need a trip to the vet if it's like that.

Amee1992x · 06/07/2017 01:44

Zoflora the pet one, anything critrusy too.

user1493413286 · 06/07/2017 03:25

Cat litter deodorant basically a powder you put in the litter helps and I change the litter 2-3 times a week and fully clean the tray with hot water and dettol to keep on top of it. Also make sure the cat litter tray isn't somewhere that's getting the sun on it during the day.
Mine tend to eat their food quite fast so the smell doesn't linger.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/07/2017 07:01

Please be careful with Dettol. Someone I know cleaned their floor with it, her cat got it on his paws and ended up at the emergency vets. Luckily he survived but it was touch and go.

  1. Good cat litter - I love Okoplus (think that's the World's Best one someone mentioned upthread). You can get it in P@H or perhaps your vet, or on Amazon. It's brilliant - all
natural, based on corn husks - controls odour amazingly, clumps well so you can remove poops and wee clumps morning and evening and just top it up. I also sprinkle bicarbonate of soda through it as well a few times a week so even better odour control, safe for the cat.
  1. Air the space well - we are also in a flat, one cat that has limited outdoor access when I'm home and one that refuses so is 100% indoor. (As well as the dog who creates her own stinks!) You can get special mesh covers for windows called 'flat cats' so you can open windows fully but prevent adventurous cats from going out the window.
  1. If there are any accidents/protests out of the litter tray then a specialised cleaning product designed to tackle wee - I really like "Urine Off" which comes in both dog & cat specific versions and works incredibly well. I also use it for an occasional 'deep clean' of the carpets if they're just getting a bit niffy, or will use the sprinkle-bicarb-about-then-vacuum method (original natural shake'n'vac!) for a freshen up.
  1. Pleasant room fragrances otherwise - I do like scented candles or will have an essential oil burner on when I'm on. Placed on cat-unfriendly shelves so they're out of the way. You can get specific pet-odour candles too.
  1. Good healthcare for the cat, especially preventative dental care & as they age, regular vet check ups and follow what is advised.
  1. Personally I feed small wet food 'meals' that get eaten straight away (or binned/the dog minesweeps if not) and leave a small amount of dry for grazing, but not enough that it's not all eaten before the next mealtime.
IrritatedUser1960 · 06/07/2017 07:37

I have two elderly cats and the house never smells, mind you food bowls get washed as soon as they've eaten and litter tray is emptied twice a day.
Because Mrs Cat is very old and has a tendency to get caught short I have to have a litter tray in my bedroom as well as downstairs so I have both windows always open with cat netting off Amazon over them so creepy crawlies can't get in and cats can't fall out. It makes a huge difference to smells.

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 10:30

I've just ordered a cordless vacuum. I have flat cat screens they cost me a fortune but I wouldn't be without them all windows are open there's just no breeze and that's part of it.

OP posts:
PhoenixJasmine · 06/07/2017 11:39

Flat cats are great aren't they Smile. Stupid no breeze. Do a rain dance/cast a spell/pray for wind?

Cordless vac is a good call, anything that makes vacuuming easier. I have a roomba and love it, set it off at least once a day if not more often and it keeps the pet hair down well. Just can't do corners/stairs etc (angling after a cordless dyson for those!)

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 12:12

Yes tescos have stains on offer. I went with the Bosch one. U see today it's fine I do think it's when they are under the weather

Toddlerteaplease · 06/07/2017 12:34

Mine are house cats and my house doesn't smell. I use really good cat litter. I o my scoop o be a day. I get visitors to tell me it smells ok, incase ive gone nose blind.

EachandEveryone · 06/07/2017 13:07

That's the trouble though isn't it? U don't really know. I use worlds best and scoop as soon as they've done it I vacuum everyday and get through two packets of wipes. I don't know if it's the tower they lie on. If it is then im buggared as it cost a bomb and I'm not chucking it!

Yesterday they were in their own for 16 hours whilst I went to see my dad. The middle door of the flat was shut so they were more contained to three rooms. The baby has had d and v. It was roasting. Today u wouldn't notice anything as I'm around in and out.
