Unneutered cats CONSTANTLY attacking my spayed female?

LollipopsandWine · 20/06/2017 00:57

Someone is going to call me unreasonable here but I'm terrified/fuming right now.
My cat is tiny, the friendliest little thing ever. She is spayed, chipped and well cared for.
There are about seven un-neutered male pet cats in my area that I now recognise, as they are all in my garden at least once a day respectively. They harass my cat.

Last week she sustained an injury in the most unfortunate place; a nasty bite mark the vet says she will have gotten as she tried to escape "advances" from a larger male cat. I had her treated immediately and it was healing well. She has been allowed out for the past two days (waited for vet to say so) and then tonight I hear a cat fight.

I rush out to see my neighbours gathered in the road, DP almost crying, and one of the male "visitor" cats sloping away. He had attacked her, and the neighbours informed us that as she tried to run away she was clipped by a car.

It took us 25 mins to lure her out from her hiding spot under a parked car. The previously mentioned wound near her bits was torn from the male cat's attempt. No other obvious injuries but of course she has gone straight to the emergency vet.

Tomorrow I will be informing the owners of these unneutered males that if they do not go and get them neutered (it costs £5 ffs, I'm paying over £200 tonight just to be seen and we have money trouble) and they turn up in my garden again I will be calling the RSPCA. I think the owners are fucking irresponsible.

Anyone got a better idea of what to do? Not going to see my cat hurt like this again.

I don't imagine there are any health benefits at all to "fake" balls for animals... O.o and it's probably super costly as well because it's purely cosmetic. Some people eh Hmm

NeedATrim your cat sounds like a proper escape artist! The vet told me today that the only important thing now is that she doesn't get at the stitches. He said they used to advise people to get a bucket like the ones you make sandcastles with at the beach, cut a hole in it and use that like the cone - apparently it worked much better for cats than the cones do! Strange.
So far though the cone is very much working, but I have to go get DD from school now - still feel really uncomfortable leaving her alone while I go out in case I come home to find it off :/

Turrets Grin I'm picturing some very funny looking cats at this point with sandcastle-bucket-collars!!
Oh my god. "Because they dislike the way their oets look after neutering" which weirdo is staring at their cats bits???? "Oh margaret, we can't get him neutered, he's got such a lovely set of balls on him!" Ffs haha

I'm wondering if I should purchase some neuticles and wear them as a pair of statement earrings.

@LollipopsandWine I can imagine the conversations going on in ordinary looking semis all over the country!

See what your neighbour's say about getting their Toms neutered and if they refuse or simply "don't get round to it" catch the buggers yourself and get it done. If it's only a fiver then it's worth it. The CPL can even lend you a trap for problem "strays".

What are the owners going to do about it anyway? It's not like being intact has ANY benefit to a Tom cat other than the ability to procreate which just worsens the overpopulation problem. Worst that could happen is a less strong smelling piss and reduced likelihood of aggression!

Feign complete ignorance IF they even notice their boys are snipped. Many wouldn't.

Fake balls Shock some folk are batshit.

I don't believe it's the cost when we got UnbornDog (who's a she) we factored in neutering although let her have one (closely monitored) season at the vets advice.

It's just responsible ownership.

As a law student I agree. It is morally wrong without their consent... But in a court of law I'm not out of order providing I do not bill the owner and the pet suffers no damage after the op.
I spoke to the neighbour......

  • "Hi, I was hoping to have a chat with you about your cat? The grey and white tabby?"

-"Oh. That's not my cat."
-"Right. Do you have any idea who's cat it is then? It's seriously injured my cat."
-"How do you know it was that cat?"
-"Why does that matter if it isn't your cat? I saw it."
-"Oh. It's my girlfriends cat but I broke up with her a few weeks ago and she hasn't come back to get it."
-"Riiiight..... Okay. But it lives with you? You're in charge of it for now? I was hoping you would get it neutered, given what it's done to my cat, and I have some information about discount schemes and things"
-"Nah, it's not my cat. If she comes back for it then its up to her but I mean... It's just a cat, you know?"

-

At this point I was nearly in tears at how stoned and disinterested this guy seemed. So I walked away. I left. I will be trapping the cat, getting it done and rehoming. The poor thing deserves better than being left like that and I wasn't getting any sense out of that guy.

SIGH.

Fucking hell.

Report it all back to the RSPCA and ask if they'll sort the situation out. Hopefully they will come fetch it and notify the neighbour.

Irresponsible fuckwits.

So is the poor cat even being fed? Sounds like getting it rehomed is best all round.

What a knob.

'it's just a cat' - i wouldn't have been able to restrain myself OP, I really wouldn't.

But, he has told you the cat has been abandoned by his exgf so I think that takes the morality of getting it snipped out of the equation. From his attitude he obviously doesn't care about it, so I would be worried about it's welfare.

Now I'm worried about both cats Sad I don't know how people can just leave pets behind when they move.

Definitely do it then. Screw the morality of it. Girlfriend has abandoned it with an uncaring and unwilling owner. Not even an owner really. Just a bloke who doesn't kick it out of his house. I seriously doubt he'd have a clue if it was secretly snipped.

Report
LollipopsandWine · 21/06/2017 22:40

I'm not surprised purely because of the way people in my area constantly get cats/kittens then end up with unwanted litters and suddenly we are surrounded by strays. Absolute tosspot of a guy, and his girlfriend isn't worth her salt either.
I'll be sorting the attacking cat out, nobody worry about that, he will be snipped asap and rehomed to somewhere where he will actually be loved. Poor kitty even I feel for him and he pretty much destroyed my cat Angry how can anyone be so cruel as to just leave their pet?!
As for "it's just a cat" this guy clearly shouldn't ever have a pet. No concept of caring for them.
Back at work tomorrow so not sure how I'm going to remain in control of all of this but I will and I will post pictures of both cats as soon as I figure out how/catch the male! Emails fired off to update the RSPCA today, they are being really helpful. My girl has had her antibiotics and painkillers and anfiinflammatories, she has eaten loads but still no wee. Will continue to update - never expected this thread to be so long!

Honestly, I'd be trapping the fuckers and getting them neutered myself.

Report

You can't neuter someone else's pet. You can't starve it before the anaesthetic. You have no idea of its medical history. You can't give it the necessary aftercare.

Report
NeedATrim · 22/06/2017 00:17

No. Maybe Op can't neuter someone elses pet..🤔 Perhaps the local animal charities will be operating in her area over the next fortnight and happen to catch any unloved moggy who strolls into their cages - I suppose that'll be upon their protocol and discretion wouldn't it. Nothing OP could do to stop them from doing so (eh, OP..?)

Report
Broken11Girl · 22/06/2017 02:16

Do it.
Lots of charities catch, snip, return. Perfectly safe.

Report
BangkokBlues · 22/06/2017 06:58

Well technically she can... catch it. Starve it. Take to vets. Look after it for a couple of days. Release it or rehome it since it doesn't have a proper home anyway.

Report
LollipopsandWine · 22/06/2017 08:07

It won't be me neutering him. I agree that without a proper medical history that would be irresponsible, but evidently the guy who has been left with the cat has no idea about his history either, and this mystery girlfriend has abandoned him so I believe RSPCA or CatsPro will be happy to take him in and check him over, as like someone previously mentioned we don't even know if he is being fed. I imagine it will be up to them what happens next, but my concern is if anything did happen to him, would the guy take him to the vets or no? What if it was an emergency? Technically he can't have him treated any more than I can, because he says it's "not his cat", and legally if we can't provide evidence of an owner/proof that he is being cared for to an acceptable standard then the charities can act on the best interests of the animal. So the question is, is he chipped? If he is they will contact owner. If not they will probably go ahead.

My girl is scratching at her cone like crazy today, we can't tell if she actually has an itch (ear is twitching and we have tried scratching for her) or if she just despises the cone. But I am worried she will get it off if she keeps doing it...

Technically this isn't a pet though. The neighbour has said it's not his cat and was abandoned by his girlfriend so the poor thing is a stray. I don't see any problem with him being neutered. (The cat, not the neighbour although by the sounds of things it might be a good idea if they were both done!).

Lollipops, I hope your girl is feeling better soon. Is she wearing a soft or plastic cone (sorry if you've already said and I missed it)? Regarding the weeing, are you still using the non absorbing litter? We had to get a sample from my boy recently and we found he would only use the Katkor litter when we put three bags in the tray.

Report
LollipopsandWine · 22/06/2017 09:37

SHE HAS JUST DONE A WEE!!!!! WOOHOO!!!!

And yes she has a soft cone on, I think she's finally sober enough to protest it today. Bless her she's worn herself out atm. She really dislikes the litter but I am omw to pick up some normal stuff, and as we only have half a bag of the non absorbant we will just put that down the day before her review so we can get a sample then - I doubt a sample would last a week anyway so best to do it last minute maybe. She is taking all meds really well and wound is still looking very tidy thank god.

I am agreeing that the owner wants neutering too xD or at least should receive 100 copies of my vets reports/fees through the post, periodically, for the next year. Wonder how fast he'd be able to contact his gf then!

Poor male cat does need sorting out one way or another. He's actually quite a handsome animal, I've often called him cute before all of this happened.... Obviously there's no way he's coming in my house but I'm really sure someone would love him.
