Unneutered cats CONSTANTLY attacking my spayed female?

LollipopsandWine · 20/06/2017 00:57

Someone is going to call me unreasonable here but I'm terrified/fuming right now.
My cat is tiny, the friendliest little thing ever. She is spayed, chipped and well cared for.
There are about seven un-neutered male pet cats in my area that I now recognise, as they are all in my garden at least once a day respectively. They harass my cat.

Last week she sustained an injury in the most unfortunate place; a nasty bite mark the vet says she will have gotten as she tried to escape "advances" from a larger male cat. I had her treated immediately and it was healing well. She has been allowed out for the past two days (waited for vet to say so) and then tonight I hear a cat fight.

I rush out to see my neighbours gathered in the road, DP almost crying, and one of the male "visitor" cats sloping away. He had attacked her, and the neighbours informed us that as she tried to run away she was clipped by a car.

It took us 25 mins to lure her out from her hiding spot under a parked car. The previously mentioned wound near her bits was torn from the male cat's attempt. No other obvious injuries but of course she has gone straight to the emergency vet.

Tomorrow I will be informing the owners of these unneutered males that if they do not go and get them neutered (it costs £5 ffs, I'm paying over £200 tonight just to be seen and we have money trouble) and they turn up in my garden again I will be calling the RSPCA. I think the owners are fucking irresponsible.

Anyone got a better idea of what to do? Not going to see my cat hurt like this again.

Have posted on Facebook last night and friends are spreading the word but I think I'll put notes through doors too. Need to go say thank you to the neighbours who stood with me last night while I lay on the road trying to coax her out as well.

I don't think I'll be allowed to cat proof my garden, or if it will work what with gates that the neighbours use too, but I will be speaking to the landlord later.

I'm honestly beside myself. I told my DD that I was taking the cat for a "check up" after last weeks visit. Now she is touch and go. I don't feel competent to have her at home in this state, what if something happens? And how in hell do I explain this to 6yo DD? DP has been in tears all day too

Will she be coming home tonight then, and going back tomorrow?

Did they say what they thought her chances were? I guess vets might not want to commit to saying Sad

Is there more they can do for her in urgent care?

I know some people don't like this, but I might consider setting up a JustGiving page in your position. I always donate to the animal/vet bills ones. Do you have a circle of friends and family that would all chip in if necessary?

It should be an offence to let intact males and females off your property FFS irresponsible owners fuck me right off.

I'm sorry your girl is going through all this, everything crossed for her.
Unneutered males can be a real pain with the fighting, aggression and spraying. People don't seem to see it as their responsibility to get makes neutered as they don't end up with kittens. I think some people are scared they will "emasculate" their cat. Ignorant.

Reow thank you so much for those links. She won't get any extra treatment in the Urgent care, but she would have vets around in case anything changed. However, UC is only 10mins drive away and neither me nor DP will be sleeping tonight for watching her. Obviously urgent care would be best in case she does deteriorate but the vet is happy for her to come home, thinks she would be more relaxed and that I should see her..... As ominous as that sounds. I do want to see her I'm just scared of things getting worse. All we know right now is that she was worse than expected and the next two days are touch and go. There are a handful of complications that could happen.
Im calling back in 10mins to see when we can pixk her up. Then get DD from school and wait

Hmm. It could be ominous, but could be that he thinks it would be comforting for her and help her recovery to see you?

Surely they wouldn't let you take her home if they thought she might pass away over night? Oh god, I don't know.

Is she on some nice painkillers/sedatives? Poor little girl. Can she eat?

Some humans are such fucking irresponsible pet owners. You can't even hold the cat responsible really, they're animals and it's what they do. But I would be very angry with someone actively choosing to not neuter.

Update: the vet says she came round really well and has been offered food. She was very happy and ate it all! Not like her to be overly excited by food, as I say she is tiny and doesnt care for big meals, so I am happy to hear that. Vet says DP can go and get her now. I am at school collecting DD, and have been told by one of the neighbours who witnessed it last night that they know who owns the problem cat. I will be going round once I have seen my own cat. She is on antibiotics, painkillers and kitty valium, as well as still being dozy after a general. I hear she has a cone on too. Dreading seeing her this ill but also cant wait to just see her and know she is okay ish.

Hooray! That sounds very positive!

Good luck with the owners. Confused Potentially awkward situation, but if they are cat lovers i'm sure they will be horrified at what happened. Maybe they'll offer to chip in costs? I certainly would.

Wanting to eat straight away? Sounds really positive. Sending healing vibes.

Fingers crossed for her here OP xx our little cat was often attacked by an unneutered male - luckily she was never seriously hurt but she was always absolutely terrified and had to be washed a couple of times (i couldn't let her lick herself clean Sad )

It's just fucking ignorant and irresponsible to not neuter.

Could you make / buy a run to keep her safe perhaps?

Update everyone: she is home. High as a kite right now, she has a cone on, is shaved all over her back end and has been staggering because she is still very drugged. The stitching job looks good but it's very obvious how extensive her wounds are, me and my DD have been in tears. She has come home with meds to be administered tonight, and goes back tomorrow for more work. She has settled down by me for a sleep atm.

Also, as I walked DD home explaining that our cat is "poorly" and will be "very sleepy and dizzy", the horrible gossipy gobshite teen daughter of one of the witness neighbours shouted to us, "OI! How's the cat? Did it get hit by the car then??" Absolutely no regard for DD listening, no subtlty or emotion. The cow. So I had a very stern word, then reassured DD that she is just "poorly", but it really hasn't helped the emotions.
I haven't been to the neighbour yet to tell them about the incident, as I really just want to sit with my cat, but I will march over there later and try to explain without crying/calling their cat a number of offensive names.

I know this sounds a bit morbid and horrible, but could you bring yourself to take some photos of her injuries, specifically the back end? In case neighbours don't take it seriously or try to minimise the situation?

May be worth also asking the vet for a medical report to show the neighbours.

In all seriousness their cat nearly killed yours. So any documentation you can gather to show the rspca may be v v v helpful if it comes to the point when they have to force the owner to have their cat neutered.

LollipopsandWine · 20/06/2017 17:23

I'll be asking DP to help me take some pictures and properly document what's happened later yes. I still think the paper should probably print something to try and make cat owners more aware. It's gruesome though, the damage.
The vet says if the car did clip her it's done absolutely no damage at all compared to what the other cat did and that it was definitely an attempt at sex gone completely wrong.

DP is now leaving me for an hour to sort out loose ends after having to miss a lot of work today and needing to miss tomorrow morning too. I am a bit terrified about being left with both the sick cat and my daughter... Might ask my Dad to come sit with us maybe

I really hope they agree to neuter. I can't see why they wouldn't once they know what's happened.

If they are cat lovers and good owners I'm sure they'll be very upset.

I agree with going to local papers having them run something on the dangers of not having toms seem to. Shame these people if they're so stupid to not agree to it.

How's girl doing now?

Reow surely nobody could refuse to sort the issue at this point. I know I would be mortified. I'm sort of expecting a really shitty person who somehow tries to blame me or downplay it though :/ maybe I'm being pessimistic.
She is looking a tad more lively now, has napped a bit and eaten a small amount, but is a bit annoyed that I can't give her more yet. Anxiously watching her every move and awaiting DPs return.

Has she had a wee OP?

Report
LollipopsandWine · 20/06/2017 21:46

Redsippycup no, no wee yet :/ they gave us some fancy none absorbant litter for it but I don't think she likes it. She has eaten more, and had painkillers so noe she is sparko again. She hasn't had a drink either despite my offers... I'm a teeny bit concerned. But other than that the cone has stayed, she hasn't been sick and isn't too upset. Happy to be touched and to move around. Very very sleepy. Any suggestions anyone? About how to get this wee? I don't want to force fluids as there is a small chance she actually can't wee......

How horrible and upsetting. My old tom was sexually "got at" before he died by un neutered toms Sad.
I didn't realise until I got him to the vets a few days later. Tbh the thought hadn't crossed my mind. I'm sorry if i've upset anyone

TheRollingCrone oh I am so sorry to hear that Sad ic this thread has shown me anything it's that unneutered tom cats are actually quite dangerous. Thw only reason I knew was because she had a previous wound, and because of the ordeal with the neighbours coming out and all - before now I've always disliked the thought of any cat trying it on with her but never assumed it could lead to this. You certainly haven't upset anyone though x

Still no wee 😞 though she has settled down. I have had less than 6hrs a night sleep since Thursday (I worked a full weekend shift on the bar and stayed up with the cat last night obvs) so will be crawling off to bed shortly. We are planning on bringing the kitty as well as her tray and her water so that we can keep an eye/take shifts new born baby style through the night. She's spoilt loved and usually sleeps in our room anyway so it won't be odd for her.

Updates tomorrow I guess or as soon as I know anything - and thank you all for your support, being able to put everything on here and get some opinions has really helped me to keep my head with all this!

Oh your poor little girl Sad

Hopefully she has restful sleep and gets over her dislike of the litter and has a wee. Do the vets need a sample, is that the reason for the special litter?

Report
LollipopsandWine · 20/06/2017 23:12

RedSippy yes they need a sample but more importantly she just needs to go. We are assuming she hasn't done a wee in over 12 hrs now, and the vet is concerned that given the extent of injuries to genital area she may not be able to wee :( I googled how often they should go and it turns out to be only 2-4 times a day, but I am still worried. She dislikes litter in general though, especially new litter, and I assume she knows she is sore down there... Bit like after us giving birth maybe, I do remember holding off on the loo for as long as I could when I had stitches Hmm so I am sort of praying it is that and she will go by morning.

It is too hot here and we are both too concerned to sleep!! Massive sighs. I hope she feels better soon.
