Someone is trying to steal my cat!

Came home today to find a manky collar on my lovely cat. He is super friendly but clearly not a stray, my Dd is upset because she is worried that he won't come home in future. Surely this isn't on?

Is he microchipped? Also can you just replace with your own manky collar? I had to put a do not feed one on Fluffcat as people were giving him milk and he's got kidney failure Sad

darksideofthemooncup · 13/06/2017 19:17

He is microchipped. We have tried collars in the past but he gets them off. The one he had on was really tight and hard to remove, so not only totally out of order but dangerous. I'm livid to be honest, who thinks that it's ok to do this?

If he isn't microchipped get him done asap. Maybe put another collar on and tape a message to it - "please don't feed my cat he is on a special medical diet" or similar (lie if you need to).

Do you know who it might be? Maybe worth putting leaflets through the neighbours' doors as well, saying your cat needs a special diet and if anyone sees him, please don't feed him as it will lead to loads of vets bills. That should stop them trying to take him....

leighdinglady · 13/06/2017 19:19

You need to put a collar on it for a least as long as it takes them to get the message. They might think it's a stray. You can get collars with 'do not feed' stitched on. That should stop them feeding him and he'll stop going there.

Pisses me right off too

KirstyJC · 13/06/2017 19:24

Make sure you get a quick release collar - our cat would have hange#d himself on a tree branch if he didn't have one! I also sent a message to a neighbour via his collar, as he lost it and then it appeared back on him a week later which was freaking me out! I taped a message asking who put the collar back on as I thought it was lost and a neigbhour wrote back!

In this case, I would DEFinitely lie and put on a note saying he has very expensive specialist food presribed by a vet due to complex medical issues. That should send any wannabe cat stealers packing!

NC4now · 13/06/2017 19:32

People are so cheeky. Bet they won't be so eager to pay the vet's bills.
That's why we don't let Ozzy go further than the garden.
I don't suppose there's any way of finding out who it is?

Want2beme · 13/06/2017 19:33

It's good that he's microchipped, so at least you can prove he's yours if the other person starts to get proprietorial. Would he wear a safety collar for a few days with an ID barrel on, with a note saying he's yours. It is annoying, but maybe they think they're trying to help him. I'd hopping mad!

Monkeypuzzle32 · 13/06/2017 19:37

You could put a paper collar on with a message?

HotelEuphoria · 13/06/2017 19:42

Mine wears a collar that says "I am microchipped" on it, it us a quick release safety one. eBay. That should tell the thief that he has a home and is also chipped!

KirstyJC · 13/06/2017 20:00

It might be worth letting the vet know as well, in case someone tries to bring him in to register him.

Upsideout · 13/06/2017 20:15

We've literally lost our cat because of this Sad. She won't come home anymore. Nip it in the bud OP.

darksideofthemooncup · 13/06/2017 20:33

Thanks all, I've just ordered a 'do not feed ' collar. Hopefully he will keep it on long enough to get the point across!
