It's normal to refer to ourselves as mummy and daddy to our cat right?

Right??

OP posts:
Teardropexplodes · 19/05/2017 18:38

Mummy here too.
MIL refers to him as her grandkitten, and sent him a Christmas card from Grandma and Grandpa.

ToothTrauma · 19/05/2017 18:42

Oh yes. We were mummy and daddy to our two wonderful cats, both of whom have now sadly passed away.

We are now mummy and daddy to our gorgeous puppy, who is a wonderful conversationalist Grin

sonlypuppyfat · 19/05/2017 18:47

I am my cats mum and my cat is a brother to my children

LittleCandle · 19/05/2017 18:56

Yes, I'm mummy to the cats. CandleCat2 was slightly confused when we first got him (along with CandleCat1, because they are actually brothers) because DD2 wanted him to be her cat, but he was already calling me mummy. Then DD2 grew out of wanting to be mummy, so she's now his sister. DD1 is allergic to them and never lived with them, so is no relation. They also get narrated all the time, as does the dog, who is grumpy with me today for taking him to the groomers!

Eolian · 19/05/2017 19:02

Yup, we are mummy and daddy to ddog. Bizarrely we never were to dcat! I think it's because he is so much more interactive and obviously devoted to us than dcat ever was!

MaisyPops · 19/05/2017 19:09

No.
I know I'm in the minority but pets are not children. Nobody is mummy or daddy to animals and they are not 'going to be big brothers' in pregnancy announcements.

Pets can be loved dearly and are part of the family but they are pets not children

Umpteenthnamechange · 19/05/2017 20:01

Here we are. Took a fair while though!

I wasn't aware this was an echo chamber thread.

OP asked about calling pet owners mummy and daddy. I don't agree with it and find treating animals as children bizarre.

Gah81 · 19/05/2017 21:12

I don't but I do do a voice for my cat: she's a sweary, seen-it-all-and-you-don't-impress-her-much, cackly elderly lady.

MaisyPops · 19/05/2017 21:26

gah
My parents cat has a voice in their eyes. I'm not one for humanising animals, but when they talk to her and put a reply back in her voice it's hilarious.
Now each time I see her I can only hear this made up voice my mum has created.Grin

Mumtobe12 · 19/05/2017 21:29

Of course completely normal our 2 our fur babies and refer to each other as mummy and daddy around them. Going to be odd when our DC is born next month but I'm sure they will learn to realise fur babies there brother and sister he he x

Ditsy1980 · 19/05/2017 21:30

Cat is daughter's so she is his Mammy. I am his Auntie. I tried to explain that in that case technically i would be cat's Granma but DD was having none of it. So cat aunt I am.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/05/2017 21:36

Yes it's totally normal. Even our last ndn would talk to our cat & tell him "that's a dogg-y, dogg-y" in the manner of one teaching animals to toddlers with a hard-soft intonation.

stumblymonkey · 19/05/2017 21:42

Absolutely.

I am Mummy, DP is Daddy. The two older cats are Aunties to the two kittens even though they're not related.

Perfectly normal Grin

stumblymonkey · 19/05/2017 21:45

I also pretend that I am a cat telepath and read the cat's mind and tell DP what she is thinking...

"DCat says you must make Mummy a cup of tea"

I knew DP was a keeper when he needed to get past one of the cats and said "excuse me" and "sorry" to her Grin

DH won't let me. Something to do with me needing to deal with infertility and never having children.
I do when he can hear though.
She's my baby.

Ollivander84 · 19/05/2017 22:15

My cat says mama. I can't be mean and say no I'm not Grin

Umpteenthnamechange · 19/05/2017 22:15

Oh dear..

Toddlerteaplease · 19/05/2017 22:18

Even my late vocation to cat parenting friend once referred to himself as his cats daddy!

Toddlerteaplease · 19/05/2017 22:19

That video of Ollie saying mama is adorable!

Toddlerteaplease · 19/05/2017 22:22

Maisey. My parents are exactly the same. Every single neighbourhood cat also has a voice and an entire personality as well. As do my cats. My parents are not as bonkers as I thought!

GriefLeavesItsMark · 19/05/2017 22:27

Grief cat is very sweary, and calls my Dh a fat fucking idiot if he is too slow with the dreamies. I have asked gcat not to do this, but he ignores me.

Weedsnseeds1 · 19/05/2017 23:00

Of course, when I have been away with work for a few days he's bouncing up and down in the window shouting" Mummy's home". OK he's shouting "ack, ack, ack" but the sentiment is there!

Want2beme · 19/05/2017 23:04

stumblymonkey who can resist a man with such good manners. I do hope that Dcat is gracious towards your DP.

I'm forever apologising to my Dcats. Alas, they're very unforgiving.
