Stray has broken my heart

Was driving home from an appointment yesterday and saw what I thought was a scruffy kitten on the footpath. I went back for a better look and it had crossed the busy road and was hiding under a parked car.
After a couple of minutes of talking to it, it came out and let me pick it up and I realised it was skin and bone and had a poorly eye. Took it to the vets who said it is not a kitten but actually about 15 and with a number of health problems.
It is eating and its eye is improving but it has loads of fleas, has a fast heartbeat and appears to have lumps and bumps on its kidneys. So vets are saying prognosis doesn't look good.
Local branch of the RSPCA are paying but say it would be impossible to rehome at that age. If it survives and will get on with my cat and cope ok with my very noisy kids, I'd love to have it, and a man has seen it on Facebook and said he would take it in as well.
It just breaks my heart to think of what this poor cat has been through, and that it might be too late to save it. I'm trying to tell myself that at least if it does have to be put to sleep, it has spent its last few days warm and fed. But I'm sitting here crying.
I don't know what I'm asking really. I guess I just wanted to offload...

What a lovely thing you did for her. I'm sure she felt loved and wanted at the end

CatsBatsEars · 07/03/2017 11:56

Sad poor wee thing.

Comingupcabbages · 07/03/2017 13:11

Papergirl1968 I hope you are feeling okay today, so sad but she would have loved being in the warm and fussed over for her last days.

Potentialmadcatlady · 07/03/2017 13:19

Fly high wee one, I'm so glad you had a few days of love, warmth and comfort thanks to Papergirl...

Ahh, I've cried buckets, Cabbages. Total over reaction, i know. I sometimes think how much easier life must be for non animal lovers...

Lovely that someone has cared enough to cry for her.Flowers

I can't read online newspapers anymore or stories on Facebook because I get so upset about animal cruelty.

Thank you for being so kind, it's the little things that count.
Is it too early to think about taking on a rescue for that cat shaped hole?

When my dcat got killed on the road, it was suggested on here and it did help me Flowers

Sparkly we have a big boy cat, who brings me such joy and comfort every day and thankfully takes everything in his stride, including my very noisy, volatile daughters and their shouting, screaming and door slamming. I'd have loved to have had this little stray and would have been willing to give it a try but I wasn't sure this was the right home for her. A couple of other people were offering homes though.
Everyone has been so lovely on here, thank you all x

What a lovely person you are OP, thank you for taking her into the vets and although she couldn't be saved she got to pass away comfortably Flowers

Well done OP. Something similar happened to us with a stray years ago. My husband still remembers her with a tear in his eye
We only knew her a couple of weeks and she was a fantastic cat but very ill.

You did the right thing.
