Ancient cat hates taking pills

19 year old cat has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. She hates taking pills and it is too distressing to do this every day. She won't eat food with pills crushed on.

I know it will kill her if I don't do the Meds but she's perfectly content at the moment, if a bit skinny, but given her age I don't want to be upsetting her on daily basis. What's the best to do? I have insurance

My old boy cat had an overactive thyroid and was terrible at taking the pills he would spit them out in spite of everything and both he & I ended up quite distressed by it all! In the end the decision was forced by him having a very serious blood reaction to the pills so we opted for surgery. He was 16 but in otherwise reasonable health and he recovered very well. I was worried about the op but my vet said it was a common one for elderly cats and their associated health problems.

Ask for the transdermal gel, it's called methimazole. It works very well, you just rub it on ears. Much less stressful for all involved. Surgery or radioactive iodine are your other options but if very elderly I'd go for the gel.
