Pouring with rain, cat won't stay indoors

I've resorted to closing the flap to keep him inside. He's just come in for the second time today soaked through. He's going to have to stay put until the rain stops. He doesn't seem to mind being cold or wet.

Mine don't mind either. DCat 2 likes to come in soaking and now demands to be dried with a towel....my own fault

Some Cats' like going out in the rain. They just enjoy it. Not sure what the problem is unless he is ill or something [confusrd]

MCat came in at curfew (dusk) and decorated my lovely high thread count bed linen with muddy paw prints. At least it washes well.

Little M's been sensible, and not ventured outside.

I have one cat that hates rain and another that is oblivious. He has very thick fur and I think the rain doesn't reach his skin. We just let them out if they want to go out. Not sure why it's a big deal (although the muddy footprints on the bed might be a pain, harder to get a cat to stop and dry his feet I guess!)

One of ours loves the rain... and like pp's cat comes in when he's dripping wet, gets towelled off, then he's asking to get back out again. He hates the wind though, and gets very cross if it's windy and rainy at the same time (which it often is, of course!). Odd buggers sometimes!

Mine is very cross about the rain. She has been mewing in an annoyed voice, dashed out of the cat flap, then dashed back in again after 10 seconds. Thankfully it stopped a bit earlier so she could get out for some fresh air. Crazy cat. If she could talk she'd say 'Hooman, stop the wet stuff right now, its horrid'

Why do you want to keep him inside?

I was worried that if he gets too cold that he might get sick. Sounds like I have nothing to be concerned about. He had cat flu before we adopted him if that makes any difference.

He has a tendency to disappear for hours which I don't like. I know that he wonders the neighborhood and sometimes gets in to fights. Our previous cat always stayed close to the house and always came when called so this is a new experience for us. Even though we have had him for almost a year I still get a little nervous when he's gone for hours or when he gets soaked. I'm sure that in time I will learn to worry less and will eventually end up not caring a jot.

Mine seems to like rain, but he also likes paddling in puddles and the shower tray, so a bit of a strange cat.

My 2 had cat flu before we adopted then and they are absolutely fine to go out in the rain and cold. It is recommended to keep cats in at night although i don't keep mine in because they keep us awake all night if they can't get out

Yes, some cats definitely enjoy water more than others....My neighbours cat used to poop among my strawberry plants, so one day I caught him at it, and watered him. I'll never forget the look of enthusiastic appreciation and purring from him - it was a hot day, and he obviously really enjoyed a refreshing shower :-D!

Yep, ours loves the rain and paddling the shower. He's a British Blue so think his massive fluff acts like insulation, still demands to be dried on his return and leaves a trial of foot prints everywhere.

He's 14 now and doesn't seem to be doing him any harm.

Soooooooo.....

Today, he didn't come in wet but absolutely reeking. Couldn't see any signs of poo or other muck but oh my the stench.

Managed to get him in the bath and shampoo him. He's now "recovering" in his shoe box. Not quite as pissed off with me as he was half an hour ago.

He's found some stinky fox or badger poo to roll in.

Aw he's just gorgeous I don't blame you for worrying about him, it's hard not to esp if you're more used to ones that don't venture far.

Rubbishmantra your comment made me laugh,sorry! it's always the high thread count stuff they trash isn't it? Fur balls are reserved specially for the rooms with carpets not easy clean tiles & only the best bedlinen in the house will do, don't you know?!

We are playing the in/out dance here currently. He has a cat flap but prefers to exit via the front door and demand re-entry via the kitchen door. All night.

Ours is long haired and doesn't really bother about rain unless it gets through his very thick undercoat. He is feeble about being cold though even with all his layers.

He loves his box. I have many a picture taken over different days of him curled up, often upside down. He often prefers to go in the box than cuddle with me. He is really sulking. He seems to be unwell and for the first time ever has hissed at me. I'm sure he will be back to himself by the morning but I don't think I'm ever going to be able to bath him again. Heaven help us if he ever comes home stinking again. I will probably not come out of the confrontation as well as I did today.

Apollo does exactly the same thing Monkey. If I call him to come in he'll insist on the door being opened. He often follows me in to the kitchen to wait for the door to be opened. He doesn't like his flap much.

I am so glad to see this thread! my cat Omar absolutely loves the rain- and loves even more being towelled down when he comes in. The year we had snow, he was diving into snow drifts.

I'm usually the idiot calling him in when it's pouring it down in case the neighbours think I'm mis-treating him. I was told not to towel the cats as they should dry naturally- but he loves it and purrs his head off!

Mine likes being dried with my hair dryer. If that is not an option, the next best thing is to try and cuddle up. With me. Underneath whatever top I'm wearing.

Mine spends most of his time outside but when it starts raining, I know he will be back in soon. I have a special towel for drying him off with. He absolutely loves being rubbed dry.
