Neighbour's dog attacked my cat today and broke his jaw :-(

I am so upset. The dog, which is a huge Weimaraner, jumped over a low garden wall and mauled my poor boy. I found him hiding in the garden covered in blood, clearly in agony with his jaw hanging limp, but so trusting in me to help him. He'll have an operation tomorrow, hopefully he'll be ok.

He's a beautiful boy and has become such a part of our family. He hasn't been going out very long and I'm devastated that this has happened to him :-(

Poor thing. I think you'll need to look into having a fence put on the wall.

They're resilient little things though. Give him enforced cuddles and lots of treats.

It's next door-but-one and he's said that he will put up a bigger fence. Apparently that breed have a very strong 'pray instinct' and will kill cats if they get chance. I had no idea :-(

I would report that yo the police and dog warden. They need to have that dog under control.

I hope his operation goes well, he must've been terrified.

I'm so sorry, and it sounds like the dog could have killed him. If I was the owner of the dog I would be mortified. I hope the operation will go well tomorrow.

Aww your poor boy. Bloody dog. Where was its mummy/daddy. (Owner). I hope it's getting PTS.
If it'll attacked a cat. A child could be next and may not be as fortunate to just recieve a broken jaw.

Oh FFS sake, babyspider, a dog that goes after a cat is highly unlikely to attack a child, and it doesn't need to be PTS. Stop being a drama queen.
It's owner does need to build a much larger fence to contain his dog, and pay for your vet's bills.

I really hope your lovely boy is OK soon.
Suggesting that the dog be pts would be a huge overreaction though. My cat would kill a squirrel or a hamster or other small furry thing given half a chance, its normal animal behaviour and doesn't mean she is aggressive towards humans. If someone suggested I put her to sleep because she killed someone's pet rodent I would absolutely refuse.
All the best to your poor boy though, OP. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

Definitely don't think the dog should be PTS despite what's happened. I'm devastated for my boy but ultimately the dog is a hunting breed and was just acting on instinct, although I'm glad the fence is being built. The owners have said they'll pay the vets bill, I don't know whether to accept their offer on this?

Have rung the vet to check how he's doing and apparently he tried to lick at some food earlier and is seeking out some attention (strokes) which is brilliant. He's being starved now prior to his anaesthetic tomorrow. I'll ring first thing and see how he's doing and what the plan is regarding his OP. Feeling a little more optimistic that he'll get through this ok after speaking to the lovely Vet nurse.

Just wanted to give a positive story, DH's cat was ran over and had bad facial injuries, he lived for nearly 10 years after that. Had a a bit of trouble grooming (he insisted on roaming about derelict places so would have flea problems now and then) since he had a few teeth missing but he lead a very much so active and happy life.

Of course you should accept their offer to pay vet's bill. If you refused you may give them the impression that they weren't at fault, which clearly they are for not containing their dog.

Hope your boy gets better soon and that the neighbour is taking steps to prevent this happening again!!

And yes take them up on their offer to lay the vet bills! It's fair

Oh that's so awful, your poor boy. I can imagine how I would feel if that happened to either of my boys.

Not sure if this will help but my DH accidentally hit one of our previous cats many years ago in the face with a garden scythe when clearing a rough part of our garden. He broke her jaw and split her palate in two. She looked dreadful and her jaw had to be wired and she then had to have the wire removed a couple of months later once it had completely healed. She made a full recovery as I am sure your boy will. He's in the right place and will be well looked after and have all the pain meds he needs right now.

Oh no, how scary for you and him. He's done well to get away with his life - the dog could have easily killed him. Good luck for his operation.

Definitely accept their offer to pay.

They must feel awful to be fair.

I agree, accept the offer. Also check the fence in person.

I don't think the dog should be PTS, but is there a way to log this with a local dog warden in case other incidents have / do occur?

Sounds like the owners are taking responsibility though.

I hope he makes a full recovery, poor boy. Our boy used to visit the neighbour who also had a cat. He was there one day, sitting there and being friendly when her friend turned up with a dog. I didn't know this until afterwards when she told me that she thought the dog was going to get him, very matter of factly. No suggestion that she would have stopped it.

Could you put cat proof fencing up to stop the dog getting in, or build him a run, he may not be so keen on going out after this?

Aww, your poor boy. You should definitely accept the offer to pay the vet fees, although they might not be so keen when they find out how much it is. My cat came home with a broken jaw earlier this year and the vet fees came to £2,600. Luckily he was insured, although we ended up paying an excess of over £600. Is your boy insured?

If it's any comfort, Harry's jaw was wired for 18 weeks and he lost 12 teeth (he also had an infection which had weakened his jaw) but he's absolutely fine, still crunching his biscuits! He is more wary about going out now, but I'm quite happy with that. He likes to potter in the back garden and go out the front now and then but he soon comes back.

There's been some confusion with the insurance. I was under the impression that he was covered for 4 months in the initial policy that came with the breeder (I even made a note in my diary to renew a fortnight before it elapsed). It turns out the policy was for 4 weeks. Absolutely kicking myself now but hopefully they might split or meet the cost.

Oh your poor kitty! Hope he's on the road to recovery quickly!
Hope he's insured! If so get the neighbours to pay the excess, if not make sure to accept the payment from them as it could cost a fortune!
