My new cat is on heat how can I calm her down?

I adopted a rescue cat last week who is not yet spayed. She's had kittens and I've got to wait for her milk to dry up before the vets will spay her. She's come on heat and is driving me mad with her yowling, she yowled all night last night, how long does this last and is there anything I can do to calm her down?

I found brushing my dearly departed The Creature in long strokes from neck to tail helped a lot to calm her, she came into season v. young.

Make sure she can't escape to meet a new ONS (or several) in the meantime.

Our cat came into heat after being spayed - tyrns out a small amount of tissue was left behind. Had to be reoperated.
During the day she liked to be held and gently rocked!
During the night we had to shut her in downstairs as she wailed incessantly and it was the only way we could get any sleep!
She lost weight as she could barely eat.
She was on heat for around 7 days - it was a very trying time, you have my sympathy!

Thank you for your replies, we are day 5 at cat being on heat and I can't cope with disturbed sleep for much longer, poor thing seems at her worst with it today. How long does being in heat usually last?

There is a way to relieve her instantly. But involves a cotton bud . I googled it ways when I couldn't take anymore.

I wouldn't test it out. Imagine explaining how a cotton bud got into your cats foof to the vet.

Has her milk dried up?

I think her milk has dried up she's stopped licking her teats, I don't want to go down cotton bud route, I think if she hasn't come off heat in a couple of days i will ask vets if they can spay her whilst on heat if her milk has dried up. I've read that some vets won't spay whilst cats are still on heat. I have a neutered Tom I don't know if that is making her worse, they are being kept seperate at the moment though until she settles in.

I won't take on an un neutered girl cat again, I feel a bit stupid I had no idea the heat could be like this. I've always had kittens and had them neutered asap or neutered girls.

It's hell, and also I found it heartbreaking that you really can't help them but they sound so desperate.

I would phone the vet and get them to check her milk. When I googled 'how long does this take' I'm sure I read that they can almost be in constant heat, one after the other. I could be wrong.
