I'm in a first floor flat.
The cat flap is locked at night.

WHERE THE FUCK DID IT COME FROM?

Well apparently mice only need a hole the size of the end of a pencil to get in, or something like that, not a cheering thought,sorry. Although maybe your cat bought it in during the day and hid it, played with it later?
If it makes sure feel better I have just woken up to find a poo in my sink, oh shut the window the cat uses to get out if it needs the loo, I guess I have to be grateful that the cat used the sink, at least it was easy to clean.

I see your dead mouse and I raise you, DEAD BAT! Yesterday, right in the middle of the kitchen floor. Fuck knows how she catches them. She has form for live ones - bringing them in but not killing them, so they fly off and roost in the house all day, then fly out again at night, scaring the shit out of us.

She seems to like the challenge of 'things that fly'. We have also been presented with a mahoosive hawkmoth which she also didn't kill, so it was hiding away under the sofa until it flew out. It was so big, I thought it was a sparrow to start with. She's a proper hunter and I have to keep her shut downstairs at night to stop her bringing little gifts up to the bedrooms. Here she is, in all her killer-cuteness, like butter wouldn't melt!

Mine's caught & eaten flies on occasion. I think she'd love to catch a bird but oddly enough they tend to stay away from our garden.

OP, your cat probably brought mousey in during the day - what time do you open/lock the catflap? I've had mad moments of chasing mice around the house trying to save them, only to find their little spines and tails left.

You could try a trap and release mousetrap, can be bought from amazon under humane mousetraps. They prefer peanut butter to cheese.

I see your mouse/bats/stoats and raise you an enormous live lady slow worm and a very panicky DH thinking it was a snake.

Oh, I love slo-worms. Always wanted one as a pet. They curl around your fingers and go to sleep in your hands. Very chilled out little things.

Cats hate anything snakish, (possibly because they're originally desert animals) and that's why they attack shoe-laces/ribbons. I think they're also distant relatives of the Mongoose, who are the nemesis to snakes.

It makes Harry's pond plants seem quite insignificant!

One of ours seems to be going through a phase of bringing in live frogs. Not good .

I read that that's why felines hiss defensively, Rubbish - desert animals have evolved to fear things that hiss even if they're small, because of poisonous snakes. When you think about it, they are the only mammal that hisses.
