Cat needs eye removal :-(

So, he's half wild, as in, never in, we live in the country and he makes the most of that.

Came home after school run this morning and he's on the doorstep with what looked like a prolapsed eye ball.

Took him straight in, and it's a cat scratch, through the cornea, with all innards coming out, and infected.

So he is on strong antibiotics until Friday morning, when he's having his eye out.

Has anyone experienced any of this? He's only just crapped in the litter tray after yowling the whole day to be let out.

He'll be OK won't he? He's got diarrhoea, and has been sick :( :( :(

Oh poor thing, sounds nasty Sad He will probably cope just fine with only 1 eye, I'm sure there was a very recent thread from someone in almost exactly the same situation - injury/scratch to cornea and then removal of the eye. Better that than a horrible infection, sounds like his eye is badly damaged anyway so sight probably couldn't be saved?

Poor lad. He should manage fine with just one eye - better than he's doing now from the sound of it.

I had a one-eyed cat for several years and she did just fine.
I can't really remember the bit between the car accident and the operation, but we called her Doris the Pirate Cat for many years.
The spooky bit was driving home of an evening and if she was outside waiting only one eye would glow in the dark Smile
Didn't affect her confidence at all.

This is probably the worst bit, it looks terrible, and he can't go out!!

I've just given him some more painkiller, think I'm in for a long night :(

Vet said Friday to give antibiotics time to work?

Get him done love, it'll calm him down. I'd only about 40 quid and a tiny snip, such a simple op.

Do you think they'd do it while he's getting his eye out?! Just thinking, while he's under? Or is that a mad idea?

I would have him neutered - although he might be more of a homebody afterwards, especially when winter comes on.

He absolutely needs to be neutered. He's much more likely to get involved in fights (and maybe hurt the other eye!) if he isn't. I'm sorry to be harsh but he's not "making the most of it" if he ends up seriously injured like this.
Hope the antibiotics do the trick but please do ask about neutering ASAP.

I just don't know. I don't think they like to keep them under for any longer than they have to - but when Seniorboy had his big dental, they excised a small limp for biopsy at the same time although he was older even then. I suppose an extra 5 minutes under was better, from his perspective, than a whole other GA.

Why not ask the vet? (But don't be surprised if he says No.)

We found a stray kitten with one eye swollen and infected, the vet removed the eye and the balls at the same time, and he was fine. He still went out a lot and never was a homebody really

OK, I'll ask the vet if it would be possible.

If not I'll make an appointment for when he's got over this.

Yes - I'm not in the uk, but I doubt it would be a problem, it's very straightforward to neuter male cats

I think it's certainly worth asking. The vet has seen him and if both procedures are straightforward/fairly fast, they might be quite content to go for the doubler.

Look on the bright side for him. No pom-poms might mean fewer fights/ more winter nights snoozing in front of the fire etc etc. Sounds quite good to me. Smile

My cat had exactly the same thing with a cat scratch and a prolapse. He had the eye out. He hasn't had any loss of quality of life. He is nearly 15 and it hasn't affected him at all.
The vet did tell me that the 'gap' would fill in but it never did so he has quite a fur covered hole.
The worse bit for us was keeping him in but it was all over quite quickly.

So, the vet said yes, to denutting as well as eye removal, I know it's a lot for him to get over, but hopefully keep him safer in the long run.

Tbh our boys hardly notice the balls have gone - one was leaping about and jumping up high the next day, so I wouldn't give that another thought
