Cat needs eye removal :-(

So, he's half wild, as in, never in, we live in the country and he makes the most of that.

Came home after school run this morning and he's on the doorstep with what looked like a prolapsed eye ball.

Took him straight in, and it's a cat scratch, through the cornea, with all innards coming out, and infected.

So he is on strong antibiotics until Friday morning, when he's having his eye out.

Has anyone experienced any of this? He's only just crapped in the litter tray after yowling the whole day to be let out.

He'll be OK won't he? He's got diarrhoea, and has been sick :( :( :(

(I currently have 15 cats and am hand rearing a newborn kitten, so I know of what I speak Smile)

cozietoesie · 23/06/2016 14:42

Good stuff. Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/06/2016 15:28

It's a tiny op the denutting , don't even have to keep them in so makes sense to do it when his eye gets done. Hope it goes well x

Kleptronic · 23/06/2016 15:53

My cat had her eye out at 6 months (the big cat did it, she was a bit feral and wouldn't stop jumping on him, tiny scratch on cornea and antibiotics couldn't save the eyeball) and she's 9 now and still going strong. Doesn't seem to affect her at all.

I had a boss once who only had one working eye. The only difference was that he didn't have the same degree of depth perception. (I think his brain and experience compensated for some of it.) He might not be as good a hunter in terms of actually catching his prey but I can't think of any other real impact.

He should do OK. Smile

BastardGoDarkly · 23/06/2016 16:51

Awwww she's lovely Kleptronic :)

Can't wait until it's over tbh he's so miserable :(

Has he had any food or drink today?

BastardGoDarkly · 23/06/2016 17:36

Yes, he's eating and drinking fine, he just wants to be out roaming.

I've shut him in kids room, it's too stressful coming in and out and having to block him!

When do you have to remove food? (He'll be real grumpy then.)

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/06/2016 19:54

TBH de trouble-nutting doesn't really seem to bother them. It'll take a couple of weeks for the testosterone to wear off.

Poor sod though.

BastardGoDarkly · 23/06/2016 20:29

He can only have water after 9pm tonight, then nothing in the morning :( he's up and yowling again.

It'll soon be sorted for him. You only have one night to get through now.

What time do you take him in?

Tadpoletoatoad · 23/06/2016 22:31

Here is my aged cat. Excuse the daisy chain my DD made for him!
I think he had been in such pain with the eye that having it out made him feel much better.
The only thing is we have to be very careful with other eye problems. Had to spend an eye watering amount early this year as he had a nasty infection in his only eye. Vet probably wouldn't have gone so overboard if he had still had both.

Tadpole is that a Burmese? Beautiful!

Tadpoletoatoad · 23/06/2016 22:35

He is Grin He is stunning and my first proper cat of my own. I luffs him to bits Smile

cozietoesie · 24/06/2016 11:28

Did you get him to the vets OK?

BastardGoDarkly · 24/06/2016 14:57

Hi! Yes, he's had the ops, I can get him at 6.30. complete with lampshade collar, and he can't go out for 2 weeks ! 😱

So, I've bought some posh odour control cat litter Grin

Can't wait to get him, I'll post pic when he's home.

Glad to know he'll be more comfortable with it out, it looked beyond grim this morning Envy

After 2 weeks inside you might find him a lot more sedate especially after being denutted.

Glad it all went well! X

cozietoesie · 24/06/2016 15:59

I'm also glad it went well.

He'll probably hate the cone of shame more than anything else. (I'd guess he's also 'feeling no pain' after the procedures - pain meds etc - especially considering how awful he must have felt with an injured and infected eye.)

Good luck to him. Smile

BastardGoDarkly · 24/06/2016 19:58

Just got back, he is pitiful :( will be get used to this collar?! He was starving when we got in and edge of collar just pushed everything everywhere, he worked round it in the end by sort of diving straight down on it, but I don't know how to get water into him? What's the best type of dish?

Pint mug? Can't you take it off for food?.

BastardGoDarkly · 24/06/2016 20:21

No, I daren't take it off! I gave him a really small round bowl, and held it under the collar, so he's eaten now at least.

This is going to be hard!!

OP posts:
BastardGoDarkly · 24/06/2016 20:22

I guess he's still woozy though right? Hoping he'll get better at this!

pepperrabbit · 24/06/2016 20:30

My cat will drink from a tap, maybe get him close enough and he can try that way?
Obviously we usually do this with the outside tap, though who knows what she gets up to when we're out....

cozietoesie · 24/06/2016 21:15

Poor lad. Sad

I seem to recall that posters have managed 'contraptions' by putting bowls on raised things. (I'm afraid that my own boys have drawn a line at collars - as well as pills - so I have little personal experience.)
