My cat lost its leg

winkywinkola · 30/04/2016 17:16

She was fine at around 9am this morning.

Then at about 11.30 my 3 year old ds noticed she was in the kitchen, lying very still and asked me why she was wet.

I went over and saw her right leg was missing from the shoulder. No blood at all. My poor poor girl. ShockShockShockSad

I yelled for h and we got her to vet asap. He said he's never seen such a clean slicing off like this - straight through the humerous - and that it's very dirty. He said injuries from cars usually result in shattered bone. She has wounds on her tongue and a bit of a bashed face.

She drugged up to the eyeballs so they can clean the wound and operate.

I just can't think how she lost her leg so cleanly. I looked on the road and found her broken collar with a bent identity disc.

We've not had her very long and she wasn't insured. We just didn't get round to it. Fools. She is insured now but it's going to cost us £1k for the poor lady's treatment.

What a crap thing to happen.

Poor baby! I'm sure it won't hold her back, though no doubt she'll soon perfect the "I'm a poor girl I only have three legs therefore I need LOTS of treats" look shortly, if she hasn't already!

How's her sister with her? Bet she's happy she's home!

Please give them both a big hug for me.

x

Bless her, what a dreadful shock for you all. I'm so pleased she's on the mend, she's a tough cookie.

QOD · 04/05/2016 12:56

So pleased to read this!
Poor baby and so so amazing she got home!
Awwww

winkywinkola · 04/05/2016 14:15

She's just sleeping and sleeping. It says that she will sleep a lot on the vet's instructions not least because the drugs are powerful.

Her sister is behaving very oddly. Won't go near her sister. Bushes out her tail and raises her hackles. They used to snuggle up together. Maybe my injured cat smells of death or the vet smell isn't good.

Her sister 'isn't herself' for a variety of reasons, including smell. That would be enough. Sad

Sleep is OK I think. She had one heck of an ordeal as well as a major op and powerful meds.

Fingers crossed for her. Take care yourselves.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 04/05/2016 15:17

It'll be the smell of the vet on her and it'll wear off soon enough. Could you put a blanket thee poorly one has been lying on on the other's bed to get her used to the smell?

timtam23 · 04/05/2016 21:09

Lovely to see the pics of her and she looks so relaxed considering her ordeal!

PurpleRibbons · 04/05/2016 21:23

She's lovely! Pleased to hear she's doing well.

cozietoesie · 05/05/2016 09:37

How is she this morning? Still zonked?

Oldraver · 06/05/2016 10:56

I keep thinking about you poor cat, I hope she is feeling better soon.

My parents adopted a cat with three legs and one ear, the result of a dog attack (they think) and he got on really well. They were warned he may suffer arthritis in later life.

winkywinkola · 06/05/2016 17:20

She's been hiding under the floor in the utility room for 36 hours.

I'm so worried. The cats always go there but she's still there. If course she might be coming out at night to eat the food I leave her but she's not had her meds.

TheEmmaDilemma · 06/05/2016 17:33

Oh my goodness. Poor little thing. What a complete shock that must have been. I'm glad she's doing ok.

She might just be adjusting and scared, or hiding in pain as she isn't getting the meds. Can you call the vet for advice? Try and tempt her out with treats/tuna/prawns or something?

cozietoesie · 06/05/2016 18:05

Can you get her out of there without too much physical difficulty?

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 06/05/2016 18:09

Oh no, poor thing, do you think if you mix some of the medicine in her food - preferably something you know she can't resist, she'd possibly come out?

winkywinkola · 06/05/2016 18:18

Have used her favourite smoked salmon. No luck. I can't get her out myself. They get in an out themselves no bother but with three legs, who knows?

H has broken open the vent that leads into the über floor area. She can get out if she wants to.

There isn't anything else I can do. Feel a bit desperate!

TheEmmaDilemma · 06/05/2016 18:27

Oh hang in there Winky. She's been so strong until now, they don't give up easily.

My fingers and toes are crossed for you.

cozietoesie · 06/05/2016 18:31

Is there no way you can reach her?

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/05/2016 18:34

I think you need to have the floor up.

She's had major surgery & needs care.

QOD · 06/05/2016 18:39

Oh noooo poor baby

FannyFifer · 06/05/2016 18:49

Goodness there has to be some way to get her out?
Is she moving about?

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 06/05/2016 19:17

Would it be worth giving the vet a ring for advice? I'm assuming she's going to need her dressing changed/taken off at some point.

I've not used it but there's a product called Feliway that's supposed to help cats feel less stressed - might be worth a try?

msrisotto · 06/05/2016 20:06

Can you grab her? She needs her meds.

winkywinkola · 06/05/2016 20:35

No I can't grab her. We've knocked a hole in the wall for her to come through.

Vet said to leave food out for her and she will come out when she's ready.

Poor girl.

msrisotto · 06/05/2016 20:37

Poor little thing. She's been through so much Sad and so have you!

theveryhighlife · 06/05/2016 20:45

Just read your post, your poor poor baby. I'm so glad she's pulled through. What a super star she is. I hope she continues to thrive and comes out of her hidy hole soon Flowers
