CPL home check tomorrow

Hi all,

This subject has probably been done lots of times so apologies in advance. Got a home check tomorrow for an indoor cat who we haven't actually met yet. What should I expect to be looked at and what questions may I be asked?

So far I have answers to where the cat would eat and use litter tray, where it could have privacy in first few weeks, what vets I may sign up to, feeding schedule, what I'm going to buy etc. can anybody think of anything else?

Thank you

I've been looking literally all over county so far and loads of places are immediately a no go as they either won't rehome near roads and/or with children under 5. One rescue was really happy I had enquired then as soon as mentioned the road they shut the conversation down and ignored me. Just today I've ruled out 5 places due to "policy"

This might sound crazy but would you consider moving? Obviously not JUST for a cat - it's a massive expense and upheaval just for that - but would there be other benefits to moving?

DH and I were living in a flat and I couldn't wait to move to a house so we could get a cat. We now live in a house on a quiet residential street which was what we wanted in general but also so we could have a cat. Now we have two cats! We keep them in at night and let them out in the daytime.

Just wondering if a move might be on the cards for you at some point in the future whether it would be worth waiting until then? Then get a more cat-friendly place?

MrsMoggy · 16/02/2016 12:08

Not a chance of us moving anytime soon we've just put in for primary schools etc with this address. Also I don't drive so we would always be living centrally and close to town/roads. We have a 2 bed house with plenty of space just no garden. We can't afford to move anyway. My sisters have a pedigree kitten, cost them £500 so they've never let it out despite having big garden and living in a quiet cul de sac. It's never shown remotest interest in getting out. Realistically the cat fits in with us or we don't get one

I do think the policies of some rescues are too rigid. We are always told (quite rightly) that we should adopt rather than buy but it's not always possible. I managed to keep Harry indoors for a couple of weeks (he's used to going out) after he had an operation so I'm sure if I can do it as a temporary measure anyone who is prepared for an indoor cat would cope.

NameChange30 · 16/02/2016 15:14

Are there any pedigree cat rescues? If so maybe you'd have better luck with those?

MrsMoggy · 16/02/2016 15:25

No pedigree ones no. I've looked at every place in this county and the next

I'm sure there is a cat for you! Do you mind me asking roughly where in Cheshire you are? If not too far try dove holes cat sanctuary,I believe they rescue some cats from Manchester so even if too far to travel they may be able to recommend a place to go nearer you. Good luck

MrsMoggy · 16/02/2016 16:44

We are in crewe and nantwich district so the manchester ones are bit far and they won't rehome to us or do home visits in our area

Sorry I meant the dove sanctuary (they're near buxton) rescued cats from Manchester and then rehome nearby so might be able to recommend somewhere for you. Appreciate they're a bit far but phone call might get them to recommend someone? There is also heatons in Heaton chapel. In Macclesfield there is windyway and cream. I appreciate all of these not on your doorstep but they're independent and possibly more flexible.

Just been turned down by another rescue after waiting all day for a response, a small rescue that has been complaining of being full for months, but can't find a cat that is suitable for indoors and children. I give up now as I am getting beyond cross with it all it's no wonder there's so many cats waiting for homes. I've literally run out of options now as looked at every rescue everywhere we can feasibly get to, and all the cats for sale haven't had everything done and are too expensive to get vacced etc. Wish we'd never started this, lost £50 adopting Callie and £100 plus on everything a cat could need, toys, food, tray, post etc. Pointless.

Mrs I have, in the past, rescued kittens from my local vetinary surgery. Perhaps this could be an option for you?
My friends dd is a nurse in a local practice and they try to rehome abandoned kittens/cats themselves, rather than send them to CPL or rescues. Also, they ensured the kittens are wormed, flea treated and in good health, no fee was involved, but a donation requested. Good luck.

Mincepies76 · 16/02/2016 19:41

Would something like the healthy pet club be an option for you if you got a kitten? We pay £10 a month and that covers the vacs, worming, flea treatments an annual check and reduced neutering. We have an indoor cat and will get him done but there isn't the pressure to do him so he can go out, so if you were the same you could save for the op?

MrsMoggy · 16/02/2016 20:40

Thanks missmarple good idea but I already tried all the vets. Maybe when it's full on kitten season there will be more available.

mincepies I've looked at those plans before but as far as I was aware they don't cover the initial kitten vacs, just the yearly top ups? I know being indoor there's no rush on the neutering front just concerned about spraying or cat being in season

Mincepies76 · 16/02/2016 21:02

Hi, mine covers the initials and boosters Smile

Mincepies76 · 16/02/2016 21:03

My kitten is coming up to 6 months and not neutered yet and no spraying...so far!

Mincepies76 · 16/02/2016 21:09

www.thehealthypetclub.co.uk/clubs/puppy-and-kitten-club/

Initial vacs and chipping included!

timtam23 · 16/02/2016 22:59

I would think that when full-on kitten season starts you would be able to find & rehome a kitten one way or another. Mincepie's payment plan sounds more hopeful. I do hope you manage to find a suitable cat/kitten Flowers

MrsMoggy · 17/02/2016 21:00

My MIL has been helping out looking and ringing round for me. She's found an rspca 6 month old kitten/cat an hour away from us that would prefer an indoor home due to an eye problem (no lasting damage just something from birth that makes him a bit clumsy). He's not on their website yet so not seen him. We will hopefully go and meet him tomorrow night, it's a bit of a trek to get there. Then if we like him we will have to be home visited etc so I'm not getting my hopes up, just taking it as it comes

MrsMoggy · 17/02/2016 21:01

And thank you for the payment plan link mince it's definitely worth considering

Mincepies76 · 17/02/2016 21:09

Good luck, hope it works out Smile

NameChange30 · 17/02/2016 21:53

Oh that's promising! Fingers crossed for you. Smile

MrsMoggy · 18/02/2016 20:36

Well we just got back from meeting the cat, a girl it turns out, not a boy as my MIL thought. She's 6 months old. Beautiful white and grey markings. Watched her playing and jumping. She let us give her a stroke including my 3 year old and seemed really affectionate and not scared of my son so that was good. Her little eye was a bit of a mess but only noticeable up close. It will always be like that and just needs occasional cleaning.

Anyway, we have reserved her for now and are waiting for a home visit. So am staying calm and not getting too excited this time.

Mincepies76 · 18/02/2016 20:59

Fingers crossed Smile is the home visit soon?

SunsetDream · 18/02/2016 21:13

Fingers crossed!

MrsMoggy · 18/02/2016 21:22

It's not been arranged yet as because it's not a local rescue to us they have to get in touch with a branch that is to conduct it so may take longer than normal. It's a shame the cats fosterer can't do our visit as she was lovely
