I thought I had 2 girls now I'm not so sure.

I have what I thought was two girl cats as that's what the lady told me. However one girl seems to have sprouted an impressive set of balls! I've tried to take a picture but as she/he is black the balls/ suspected balls don't show up in pictures!
I remember someone on here saying they could tell just by looking at their face if they are boys or girls? Is this possible?

Oops - which 'lady' was this? (And how old are they?)

You can often tell their sex by the look of them but it's not infallible. Have they not been to the vet recently?

thecatneuterer · 25/10/2015 23:12

It was me who said I can generally tell just by looking at their faces. The older they are the easier it is though.

But that cat in the photo looks like quite a mature cat so I don't understand how you don't know. You must have taken them in for neutering surely?

Or have you just taken them from a rescue and you were told they were already done? In which case there seems to have been a bit of mix up.

She/he is 6 months old and booked in the be spayed in two weeks time. So far they have been indoor cats.

Ah - only 6 months? That could well be a young male then. (He does have a sort of 'Bring me my spear so that I may sharpen it' look on him, right enough.) It can sometimes be qjuite difficult to tell at an early age - with the occasional kitten - what sex they are but I think I would be much swayed, given his age, by the appearance of the impressive pom poms.

Make sure to tell the vet about the 'possible mistake' so that they know what to expect on the day. Is the other youngster to be neutered also at the same time? (It's entirely possible that he could have impregnated her - Oneago's litter brother got a female at the breeder's pregnant at 5 months to everyone's seeming consternation - but if she's also to be neutered, that op should take care of any problems.)

PS - I do hope that - just in case - he's not called by an intensely feminine name? Smile

You can tell by their face but the testosterone has to do its work. Male cats have broader heads. That cat does look male, he is starting to puff out around the sides. Vets can tell at a glance. Better get them neutered quickly if you have one of each!

BlackHillsofDakota · 26/10/2015 10:15

Thanks all that's what I'm worried about that he's got his sister pregnant, might try and get an earlier appointment!! He's called dottie and my dd is insisting it remains male or female!

Are you having his sister neutered at the same time?

BlackHillsofDakota · 26/10/2015 11:09

Yes they're both booked in, I'd been a bit slow getting round to it as they were indoors and both girls. They're keen to go out now which is why I booked them in but obviously if one is a boy it's a bit more of a priority! I would never have taken one of each, I only ever wanted two boys or two girls.

Yes get it done straight away. From that face, if I had to guess, I would say male. But it's certainly not an exact science and the younger they are the more difficult it is to tell. The balls on the other hand are much more of a give away Grin.

Once they're neutered it doesn't seem to really matter what sex they are. Having one of each shouldn't be fundamentally any different from having two females.

BlackHillsofDakota · 26/10/2015 12:51

Called vets and rearranged for Thursday, thanks everyone!

Yes, I would say male as well. He just has that look about him! He's gorgeous though.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/10/2015 14:45

He looks male, and he has conkers so lets go with male.

The girls have more delicate features. Male cats are very loving though.

isseywithcats · 28/10/2015 00:00

if you look at the cats rear if a girl you can see two holes around a fingers width apart , if a boy you can only see one hole and at six months would definitely have pom poms showing hope this helps
