Staying in touch with my cat's previous owner via the shelter?

Hello,

Me again!

Recap for new followers: I adopted 9yr old Kenzo this week from a shelter. She was very well looked after but the lady had to move abroad so gave her up. I know the lady has been phoning every week to see if she had been rehomed yet.

I have agreed to send some photos of Kenzo settled in her new home together with a letter to the shelter for them to forward to the previous owner. This is their standard practice.

I assume they will keep it anonymous but should I also (out of the goodness of my heart!):

  • offer to send a letter once a year (anonymously via the shelter); or
  • allow the previous owner to stay in touch with me directly

Or am I being too generous? Would she try and steal her back and/or want to visit and would that confuse the cat?

I'm probably overthinking this but I feel bad for the lady!

Thanks!

I think you're kind but overthinking it; I don't think a visit would confuse the cat but it's not necessary.

It would be lovely to send news via the shelter (not directly)

I'm on the other side, I've fostered cats waiting for new homes and would've loved to hear that they were happy and settled in their new lives.
Years later we still talk about them with affection and wonder how they're getting on. Sadly we just don't know.

I would not allow direct contact. What if she comes back after a few years and hopes the cat to be returned? Obviously, the cat is yours now but it would still be painful. But via the shelter it wouldbe v kind to give yearly updates.

There was a thread on here a while ago where a poster/poster's friend adopted a dog from a bonkers family and the family kind of stalked her. It was all quite mad.

That said, I gave away six kittens over the last year and am friend with the new owners on FB and they send me photos most weeks.
