What do you feed your cat

I have two cats. They are almost 10 months old. I have been buying hills dry cat food on the advise of my vet. He recommended dry for their teeth and said it has the right nutritional balance for them but it's €48 for a 10kg bag which last about 25 days.

Has anyone any recommendations for an alternative. I don't mind spending that money on their food even though it is pricy but they have no variety and they don't even seem excited when I feed them in the morning :(

Also the last time I bought their food a got two flexible treatments costing almost €14 each Shock I'm sure I saw them a lot cheaper in asda while shopping in the north (living just across the border in ROI )
I would love to hear what you feed your cat and where you buy it

My cat loves her wet food. I give her wet food twice a day and leave dry food out for her to eat during the day and night.

Would you consider feeding wet food or do you prefer to stick to the dry food?

twinkcat · 04/02/2015 17:25

I buy from zooplus

GemmaTeller · 04/02/2015 17:31

We feed pouches and leave dry food (treats) out for snacking purposes.

Have you looked at online pet stores? I buy my dog food (royal canin) from either Animed or Petmeds and its £8 -£10 cheaper than pet shops.

oohnewshoes · 04/02/2015 18:25

I'll definitely take a look at some on line stores thanks. I like the dry food for days when I'm working but will look at pouches for the 4 days I'm at home.

Some cats don't mind the same food all the time but they don't seem keen on it do they?.

How about amionda carney? It's tinned food but good quality.

shaska · 04/02/2015 18:35

"€48 for a 10kg bag which last about 25 days."

Firstly, does this mean you're feeding each cat 200g a day? That sounds quite high to me? Unless they're giants!

Applaws dry goes down very well here, and looks similar priced to what you're feeding. It doesn't have cereals - I do think the Hills type stuff is quite overpriced and sold as 'quality' when it's not really that great.

For wet, maybe have a look at Zooplus and try some things out, a lot of their wet brands have trial packs. Then it's up to you whether the wet is a treat, or part of their regular diet. Mine have dry in the morning and wet at night and seem to like it.

RubbishMantra · 04/02/2015 18:35

Mine get Applaws dry for them to graze on. They used to get Royal Canin, but decided they hated it. When I ran out of Applaws and had to buy an emergency bag of Canin, they decided that was The Best Thing ever. Cats are contrary bastards aren't they.

They also get 2 wet meals of Animonda Carny and Cosma per day.

I used to feed only dry, but like you I felt sad that they weren't getting happy at meal-times.

Qwebec · 05/02/2015 15:47

we used to buy Royal Canin, but changed when I read more about what was in it.
Now we give Qwebecat acana (same company than orijen) after much internet research. And she is wild over it. 70% meat, 30% vegetables, all human grade. No cereals fillers. They have chicken, lamb and fish bags.
I'm really happy we changed. I don't giver her wet, but she drinks alot, otherwise I would consider it.

Katnisnevergreen · 05/02/2015 18:08

Have you tried amazon? I feed hills too, and in the uk I bought a 10kg bag for £35, I had been paying that for a 5kg bag from the pet shop...
Mine also have a pouch of wiskas/felix (whatever is on offer in the supermarket) a day as they are whiny buggers for food! Dry is down all the time - wet is 1/2 in mornin and evening. They also will eat whatever they can get their grubby little paws on (my dinner basically)

chockbic · 05/02/2015 19:23

Any recs for a dry kitten food with decent meat content?

He's either gone off or guffs Applaws and Wainwright's...

Qwebec · 05/02/2015 20:05

Chockbic orijen has a bag for cats and kittens

www.orijen.ca/products/cat-food/dry-cat-food/cat-kitten/

80% meat

I swear I don't work for them nor have any stocks inthe company Wink

disneymum3 · 05/02/2015 20:12

I feed her a combination of whiskers wet and dry kitten food (6month). I buy this as it is available at my local supermarket.

enialenagem · 05/02/2015 20:13

I also give Orijen dry after a lot of research and MACS wet. I get it from happykittycompany.co.uk. It's an online store and they sell a variety of good quality food and have some trial offers too.

Branleuse · 05/02/2015 20:41

my cats love aldis chicken tinned cat food. They really like royal canin exigent dry cat food, but i dont always buy it because its so expensive

chockbic · 06/02/2015 14:05

Thanks is there anything available on high street?

Or out of town shopping mall...

pilates · 06/02/2015 16:14

We use James Wellbeloved dry food and whiskas pouches.

emmelinelucas · 06/02/2015 16:30

Mine likes Doc Martin pouches, Whiskers biscuits and scraps. Leftovers like mashed potatoes/pasta/veg are gobbled up.
She costs about 2.00 a week to feed on average.

GemmaTeller · 06/02/2015 18:45

Ours like scraps as well, scrambled egg, mash, anything cheesy.

God help us if our cats find out there's a pack of sliced ham in the fridge, we get practically wrestled to the floor while they try and get to it.

girliefriend · 06/02/2015 18:49

My cats have which ever dry food is on offer!! Currently iams but likely to be James Wellbeloved next time as on offer for two 1.5kg bags for £16 which seems reasonable and my cats seem to like it.

My boy cat like a pouch of wet food a day as well, girl cat doesn't like it!!

They do get left over bits of chicken and fish as well.

gamerchick · 06/02/2015 18:55

I give applaws dry and chop and change her wet. Who wants to eat the same shit all the time? I won't be giving felix again though that's for sure. What a stench that came out of her when crapping.

Will be going to raw feeding eventually I'm hoping.

juneybean · 06/02/2015 18:57

We have royal canin Persian kitten for grazing and they're both picky bastards when it comes to wet so we currently have pets at home own kitten, some Felix meatloaf and some lidl pate trays for wet. They seem to devour the lidl stuff which is only 20p a tray.

Qwebec · 07/02/2015 02:25

Chockbic

I live in Canada, no idea what high street is (used to think it is a specific street with expensive shops (high sounds facy to me), but since I read the term a lot here my current guess is that it is the street with the most stores in any city in England)

But I found on the UK site of Orijen when you can locate a store near you that sells it. www.orijenpetfoods.co.uk/where-to-buy/

( feeling really tech savy emoticon)
Smile

nooka · 07/02/2015 02:39

We recently moved our cats and dog onto Orijen/Acana and have really noticed that they seem to be much healthier for it (granted dear dog did used to get lots of scraps before). We live in Canada and so like the idea of it being local, plus they have lots of varieties with interesting ingredients. Currently our cats are enjoying Regional Red: beef, wild boar, Alberta lamb, heritage pork and bison!

It sounds better than our food Grin

Before that we bought Hills/Nutrience if we went to the pet food store and whatever was on offer otherwise.

chockbic · 07/02/2015 12:10

I want to move to Canada Wine

WitchWay · 07/02/2015 20:54

Mine like Tesco jelly tins and Whiskas and Go-cat crunchies. They will eat Whiskas and Go-cat jelly but it's more expensive. They will not under any circumstances eat Tesco crunchies the hedgehog likes them

What they really prefer is to be given trimmings of actual real proper meat, raw or cooked. Today they had some raw chicken that had gone a bit manky in the freezer - much purry snaffling ensued Grin
