What do you feed your cat

I have two cats. They are almost 10 months old. I have been buying hills dry cat food on the advise of my vet. He recommended dry for their teeth and said it has the right nutritional balance for them but it's €48 for a 10kg bag which last about 25 days.

Has anyone any recommendations for an alternative. I don't mind spending that money on their food even though it is pricy but they have no variety and they don't even seem excited when I feed them in the morning :(

Also the last time I bought their food a got two flexible treatments costing almost €14 each Shock I'm sure I saw them a lot cheaper in asda while shopping in the north (living just across the border in ROI )
I would love to hear what you feed your cat and where you buy it

I've seen pets at home doing frozen raw feed for dogs, a cat version can't be far behind.

I've just ordered a mixed pack of amionda carny for ASBO cat. There's a cpl basket in tescos if he doesn't.

cozietoesie · 07/02/2015 23:36

I think it's already here, Fluffy. A quick look-see (sorry, I'm lacking time this evening for an in-depth study) reveals that Naturesmenu - who supply Pets at Home with raw dog food - also do raw cat food. So it could just be a question of PAH assessing demand and perhaps stocking some for a trial. It might be worth asking your local PAH if you're interested.

3 cats here & I buy from zooplus generally.

They get Felix Doubly delicious pouches - 5 a day between them (about £1.50) - & Royal Canin Vet Neutered Female biscuits, 1-2 bowls a day. I get the 10kg bags which are about £45 & they last for months.

All 3 seem to be very healthy touch wood. Glossy, energetic & happy anyway Smile

I have tried things like animonda carny, Bozita, smilla etc (& Aldi & butchers choice) but they def prefer the Felix

cozietoesie · 07/02/2015 23:52

Seniorboy will really only eat Felix Doubly Delicious meat in jelly now. I'm not best pleased but he's happy with it, it's a complete food and he has to eat regularly to take his meds - so I'm stuck with it.

I'm glad Fluffy reminded me about the CPL bin at the supermarket though. I have a cupboard full of rejects.

girliefriend · 08/02/2015 10:15

My girl cat had some raw chicken once and within an hour threw the whole lot back up! I think her pampered constitution can't take real meat Wink she now will only eat dry food.

cozietoesie · 08/02/2015 10:45

You can't always tell what will suit, I think. I recall that once, due to circumstances, I left a whole chicken leg on a plate on the floor. (Fair game in the cozie household, I admit.) The next morning I went looking for it but never found it again, little sharp bone, tough leg leg bone and all.

And Seniorboy only has 5 teeth !

Walkingonsunshine00 · 08/02/2015 10:53

Coshida Patè wet food from lidl and a dry food from lidl for spayed cats

RugBugs · 08/02/2015 10:57

Hills dental dry from zoo plus supplemented with raw (turkey thigh, rabbit, mince, chicken thigh) and bozita. Zoo plus is a good £10 a bag cheaper than your vets for dry, with food and litter I get my money's worth out of my savings plan!

Have had applaws and Origen dry in the past but one cat has chicken protein issues and both (even fish varieties) caused skin problems.

RubbishMantra · 08/02/2015 12:17

Sorry Cozie, I'm imagining you on all fours hunting the chicken leg, with SeniorBoy looking on all smug.

cozietoesie · 08/02/2015 12:24

And that was pretty much what it was like! Grin

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 08/02/2015 14:49

Mine loved Animonda Carny kitten from zooplus. Until last month...having just bought a month's worth. Grrrrr. However the neighbour's underfed two are now enjoying it and have taken to waiting for me when I get home from work Blush

Currently we are on a mix of Vet's Kitchen dry or Royal Canin, and Gourmet.. bloody Gourmet! for wet. Which as they are Maine Coons, plus Portia the fussy, is proving very expensive.. their food bill is higher than ours !

Oh and tins of tuna which go down very nicely thank you!

They like Felix but it gives both of the girls the runs so I avoid unless we are running out!

chockbic · 10/02/2015 15:21

I suspect you're eating value range from Tesco, Medusa.

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 10/02/2015 18:24

You're not wrong there Grin.
I may have just cooked a bag of chicken fillets for them... I'm having french stick and salad for tea... sigh...

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/02/2015 18:58

A whole french stick eh? Spoiling yourself there.

chockbic · 11/02/2015 18:41

Hope you didn't break a bit off for the mogs Wink

NameChange30 · 12/02/2015 14:52

The pet food you can buy in supermarkets is such poor quality with very low meat content. We buy our cat food online, or from our local pet shop which stocks good quality food. We give them Nature's Menu wet pouches and Orijen dry food. It's worth the extra money IMO. They eat less than they would if we were giving them cheap food, and they're very healthy with lovely soft coats.

cozietoesie · 12/02/2015 15:36

I'm just ordering more Felix online Sad - which is on offer this week so there can be a human treat as well. What can I say...........?

Seniorboy turns up his nose at Sheba. I have three boxes in the cupboard as well. Sad

sweetkitty · 12/02/2015 15:47

Just changed our 15 year old moggy onto Millies Lionheart (same company that make Millies wolfheart dog food, cats were stealing the dogs food so owners begged for a cat food) it's 75% fish, no cereals or fillers. Can already see he difference in our old mog oh and the litter tray, his poos are half the size and do not stink to high heaven anymore. Cannot recommend it enough.

MinceSpy · 12/02/2015 15:52

Felix meat not fish varieties and Go Cat for mature cat biscuits. Our six year old rescue lady cat had been neglected and turned to scavaging. She has a very dodgy tummy and anything too rich upsets her.

chockbic · 12/02/2015 16:09

cozie, can you give that food to your CPL?

storytopper · 12/02/2015 16:20

We feed ours Purina dry food - a mix of the cheaper Purina One and the dearer Pro Plan. We bought Pro Plan online - much cheaper. They tend to be less active in the winter and one of them in particular puts on weight, so we have been buying the light versions with lower fat content.

My husband cooks a little bit of fish for them every evening - usually haddock. They don't like chicken or turkey at all - strange cats. They do like a tiny bit of ham now and again - a tiny bit is all they get. And sometimes a tiny bit of tuna for humans - again just a little as too much is bad for them.

cozietoesie · 12/02/2015 16:33

I think I shall, chockbic. And that's just the Sheba as well. I was in the habit of buying food gleefully in bulk when he expressed an interest but the interest never lasts apart from Felix. I really should have learned better.

(I used to put spare in the CPL box at the local superstore but then started giving it to next door's cat. Now the superstore no longer has a box and next door's cat has moved away with his owner. I'll sort something out though.)

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/02/2015 16:36

Asbo cat doesn't seem impressed with Amionda. He's not wolfing it down like he would gourmet but he's not totally ignoring it either.

I can go into the kitchen without being bawled at so either he doesn't need as much to be full or he's killed a rabbit or he's eating another cats food.

Confused
