Having just discovered Lillies are poisonous to cats, I thought a thread listing all poisonous things for cats/kittens would be a good idea. Can you help?

I have two kittens, 4 months old and had no idea about Lillies

I know I can't use dettol to clean the litter tray and have special cat cleaning tray stuff

But what else is dangerous?

I know we can all Google but I thought a thread may raise more awareness

Our kitten is also 4months and we have read that chocolate is poisonous to cats ??

Just to say that I have used dettol wipes on our litter trays for years and both my cats are fine (never heard if there being a problem tbh). I assume its if they ingest it? But then wouldn't that be the same with all cleaning products?

I also used dettol in the kitchen and on the floor.

Obv don't do it if you've heard not to, but just to say my cats are fine!

Well I read it on the back of the 'special cat litter cleaner' so it's probably not all that reliable.

Thing is, a list compiled from Google and anecdotal evidence on a Mumsnet thread is going to be misleading at best and probably plain wrong.

It also depends on your definition of "toxic". I've seen many lists include a lot of things that would only cause a minor stomach upset.

There are some lists compiled by the poisons unit who research properly- check their website. Although no list is ever going to be exhaustive.

Antifreeze

Milk upsets their tums, not poisonous tho.

Onions and daffodils. Also too much cheese is bad but my cat loves cheese and goes mad until we give him some!

Paracetamol is deadly to them.

Any disinfectant with phenols in it, like dettol but others too, is toxic to cats.

Any member of the allium family, so chives, onions, lillies, garlic.

Bleach is very toxic to them to.

I use hot water & washing up liquid for litter trays.

They're lactose intolerant. Milk or cream should be a rare treat and then only a little amount.

Oh feckit, I've had a poinsettia out on the table all Christmas. Thanks for the warning, Lonecat, will dispose of it right now. In all fairness, Archcat has shown zero interest in it so far - I hope.

That's a relief, thanks Micah. All the same, I won't get one next year. I had this sudden horrible thought that I'd possibly wrecked his insides like when humans overdose on paracetamol.

See my point upthread- to me, something is toxic or poisonous if it has potential to cause serious or life threatening effects. A bit of hyper salivation and vomiting isn't really a major risk.

Lilies, in comparison, cause kidney failure, so they're not in my house or garden. Especially as the pollen can stick to their coat if they brush past, and be ingested that way.

Btw, paracetamol is far more toxic to cats than dogs or humans. Teeny tiny doses can kill.

Apparently clematis is poisonous for cats, but I don't know how poisonous.

One of mine loves chocolate covered raisins. He claws at the bag (and your hand if it's in the way) to get to one.
